Not to insult your friends knowledge, but if it was the Optic Nerve, he wouldn't have been able see very well, if at all, out of the eye. He would have been in a lot more pain than he seemed to be, too.

And did you see him move his eyes around? He would've been in excruciating pain if the Optic Nerve had suffered from damage.

I also didn't understand the rush to call the fight off, rather than give Alexander a few minutes to get over it. I also don't understand why Alexander didn't ask for some time, nor object when the ref flat out told him he was going to stop the fight.

 

My thought last nite as well. When the doc clearly said "I'm gonna have to stop the fight", I was waiting for Devon to say something like "just give me a second" or "don't stop the fight" or something. I'm sure it stung like hell, but at least let the ref and doc know that you WANT to continue.

 

His eyes were perfectly fine as they announced the winner. No more than 5 minutes after the incident, the 5minutes he could have taken.

 

I'm not one to question fighters' fortitude. It takes all kinds of balls and dedication just to get in the squared circle. But I do think Alexander, had he really wanted to continue, would have said so. I don't know if he was genuinely hurt and thought he might be severely compromised, but to me, he clearly didn't want to continue for whatever the reason.

 

I'm on my way to being an eye doctor, so let me try to clear this up. The ringside physician wasn't concerned about the optic nerve (you're right, that would have affected vision). He was concerned about the nerves responsible for his extraocular muscles, such as the levator which controls the eyelid. EOMS are generally innervated by the oculomotor nerve and 5th nerve.

Would taking a few or 5 minutes have made a difference in regards to the docs concerns?

 

It was one those red flag responses where you have to stop the fight on the spot if you get that response. A nerve isn't going to grow back.
