Do boxers deserve to get payed as much as they get now?

Most boxers are terribly underpaid.

 

the top boxers like mayweather oscar tyson.... get paid too much but the bottom tier guys do not make enough IMO. Alot of boxers only get 2 or 3k per fight (and are still absorbing decent punches)

MMA money will continue to rise and itll fallow a similar formula to boxing

 

2 reasons mma is a monopoly and only very top talent pool makes the cash. however mma is far superior in the FACT that we see the matchups we ****in ask for.

 

Yeah, and the amount of woman you have to screw!! That's the only real part of the sport!! The rest is for show!!

 

mate i'm a pro boxer myself and you see guys like audley harrison making 1.5 million and mayweather making 30 million. But 95% of pro boxers make around £500 to £1000 pounds for a fight. It goes from one extreme to the other and boxing is one of the lowest paid professional sports their is. Period

First of all with the exception of Floyd and Pacquiao most boxers do not get paid in relation to how much the public is interested in them. That's the whole problem with boxing - with the move from PPV to Premium Cable and from House Gates to Site Fees the revenue from which boxers are paid has only an indirect relationship to their popularity or success. Look at Alexander-Bradley - HBO paid millions of dollars for a fight that is likely to do poorly in the ratings and the Silverdome paid $600,000 and couldn't even get 7,000 to attend. That fight bombed at the box office but that does not effect the money that reaches the boxers. And to get that fighter HBO had to promise the loser $2.5million for a second fight despite the fact that Devon Alexander has zero marketablity right now.

In the UFC the economics between what a fighter earns and the revenue they generate is much closer. The UFC doesn't recieve site fees and so genuinely cares about the House Gate. The UFC rarely runs big matches on television and so headliners need to generate business on PPV. And whereas most high profile boxers can demand guarantees that run into the millions, a UFC fighter's base pay is far smaller...BUT they recieve bonuses based on the success of the event either contractual (ppv points) or non-contractual (reports suggests all fighters recieve a 'locker room' bonus from the UFC above and beyond what's in their contract). A lot of the confusion about what MMA fighters earn is that the figues released by athletic commissions are just the base pay and do not include the bonuses that a fighter may get. So for example Lesnar has been listed as earning only $1.2million for his last three fights but all credible industry reports say that the real figure is $11million when his cut of the ppv is factored in.

Now the problem with boxing is that getting paid has become less about successful promoting and more about screwing as much money out of sugar daddies - be it the cable networks, casinos or stadiums. There are few true promoters now...almost everyone is operating as a mid-level politician trying to convince the powerbroker to give them a slice of the action. Look at the difference between David Haye and Andre Berto - whatever you say about The Ducker he works damn hard to promote himself because he knows that if he doesn't sell tickets or ppvs then he doesn't get paid. Berto on the other hand doesn't give a **** about getting himself over because someone in Golden Boy or HBO has decreed that he gets millions of dollars for fighting cans in front of nobody.

And the problem with this model is that the money is getting focused solely on the main eventers - after all the casinos don't want fans in the stadium for an entire night and the cable networks only usually air two fights anyway. It is not healthy when HBO spends a quarter of their budget to secure just one fight. UFC main eventers are paid less but because of that the UFC has enough money to keep over two hundred fighters on the pay roll and pay them all a passable salary. That simply does not happen in boxing...you either have a sweetheart deal or you get nothing.

 

If they are not afraid to get hit, cut, or KOed, then why do they worry?

 

if u think an mma fighters body takes more punishment than a boxers i assume u have never done either there is a reason 45yr old football players dont go into boxing.

 

Troll post. Herschel Walker is fighting nobody but scrubs. Judging the sport based on him would be like dismissing boxing due to Celebrity Boxing.
