Liverpool Stadium 1970's and early 80's, that was a purpose built boxing stadium. Great memories. Always cold though.
JG,I miss watching fights in the Sunnyside Gardens.Or the Golden Gloves in the Elks Club.I reasonably believe that you and Burt might agree with me on this:good
Miss seein' fight posters for neighborhood shows tacked-up on telephone poles, in bars and barber shop windows, and the buzz that went with' em.
Seeing a neighborhood kid make noise in local clubs 'n graduate to MSG 'n, eventually, light-up the marquee, topping the card.
Paying a quarter on frigid NY day 'n hunkering down for hours watching the best fighters in the world train and spar at Stillman's Gym.
After the fights Friday night at MSG, going across the street to the Garden Cafeteria, seeing fighters, trainers from Jacob's Beach. Of course, going to Stillman's gym, watching Stillman, spit, bark, and cuss everybody. Having a pastrami sandwich, guaranteed to be well aged, and later to reach for a Roll-Aid. Seeing Whitey Bimstein, Ray Arcel, Freddie Brown, Charley Goldman, Chickie Ferrara, all great trainers, ply their trade.
Unfortunately we just have quality MMA fights here.........the quality level of boxing in Brazil is too low right now........ We have some good fighters, but we don´t have regular boxing events, no sponsors, nothing !! It´s a sad situation.......
Same here in Spain, hardly any boxing at all and in 6 years I've been here I've never seen a fight on Spanish tv.
