After 16 months away from the sport, Harry Joe Yorgey is making his much anticipated comeback on 2/25/11 on the undercard of the ESPN broadcast in Tulsa, OK. He will be facing Taronze Washington in an 8 round bout at 154lbs. For those of you who follow Harry and are familiar with his recent bouts, you will know that he dominated Ronald Hearns - finally knocking him out in the 9th round. He then stepped into the ring against Alfredo Angulo for the Interim WBO World Title. His 3rd round knockout at the hands of Angulo was ammunition for the internet world - both the forum's and on youtube.com. Unfortunately, what is not widely known is that he had a ruptured tendon in his ankle - suffered during his pre-fight camp. Harry's "Heart" has never been in question by anyone - which is why he fought instead of pulling out of the fight. But Harry refuses to use his injury as an excuse. After the Angulo fight - Harry joe decided a change was needed to get him to the top of his sport. That is when the "old" Harry Joe Yorgey was put to bed. The "New" Harry Joe has the same amount of "Heart", but his approach to the sport is totally different. He has added state of the art strength and conditioning training at MaxOut (suburban Philly), a new manager and a new boxing trainer - Bozy Ennis. Combine the three and you have a much stronger, technincally skilled and focused fighter ready to take on all comers. Harry is stronger and more explosive than ever before. His boxing prowess was always his strength, but Bozy Ennis has taken that skill to a whole new level. And Harry finally has someone he trusts to handle his affairs so he can concentrate on just boxing. Harry knows that the only way to prove the critics wrong is to do it in the ring. To be the best he needs to beat the best. That is what he intends to do - starting on 2/25/11. All he is asking of all the boxing fans out there is to reserve judgement until you've had a chance to see him fight again. He knows the ugly stain that the Angulo loss has had on the minds of the critics - which has left them less than excited about his chances. He looks forward to changing that perception immediately. Cool and all, but, honestly, wtf does Yorgey's ankle have to to with being obliterated by Angulo? Did Yorgey's messed up ankle mess with his chin or something? Not trying to be a dick, I just am not a fan of excuses, for a fighters loss. As I've seen that the fighters usually with legit excuses, don't bring them up after a loss.
I don't know how any man on earth comes back from this display of bobbleheadedness: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GalTuYwGvHw[/ame] This should make any sane person say to themself, "you know, I don't think boxing is for me". But I guess we're not talking about sane people, we're talking about boxing. A fair amount of time HAS passed since, though, and Yorgey DOES have minimal skills that look good at a journeyman level. We shall see. The commentary was dead on!
Good luck to Harry. I just hope he doesn't get seriously hurt. The beating he took was the kind that does long term damage to a fighter, and not just mentally.
A ruptured tendon in his ankle didn't stop him moving around the ring the way he did against angulo, to be honest with you mate excuses are common place in boxing and your boy got destroyed at the hands of a better fighter, would it not be better to accept that rather than come up with excuses?
I agree and disagree. Excuses are to be hush-hush, period. Suck it up and go out there and get it done. Either run your mouth and opt out of the fight using excuses as your shield, or shut your mouth and make the most of what you got while the opportunity, that so many others would kill for, presents itself. Don't go in there with pre-planned excuses. Either pull out or don't. Boxing fans don't care about your injuries, hence, they are boxing fans, and the last thing they want to be bothered with is excuses. That's the etiquette. Buster Douglas didn't use his mother's death as an excuse, but rather motivation. I'm sure the death of one's mother is just as painful as whatever the **** somebody can do to your ankles, the exception being that one scene in the movie Misery. But a bad ankle in boxing ruins your footwork and distracts you mentally. More importantly, power punches, the ones that you sit on, start from a twist of the ankle, and work themselves up to the knee, then hip, then back, working as a crankshaft, sending all that artistic motion into the shoulders and arms, which do nothing but finish punches that all began from the floor and worked themselves up.
Now Paul Sheldon, if he had had a fight schedulled anytime in the near future, following the below clip, I would think even the most sadistic boxing fan would let HIS excuse fly: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5OlolbLXvw[/ame] But like I said earlier, I've heard of built in excuses, but who the hell would go into a fight with a bulit in excuse like that one? A sane person would pull out, but dammit, would not therefore be a boxer.
