    Enjoy....:D

I remember this fight..... Most of Australia were cheering on Monzon.

    Like father like son

Seems that the father could box a bit..... when he wasn't running "Protection Rackets" in the Redfern area:deal

Most of Australia were cheering on Monzon? Really? My old bloke reckons Tony was quite well liked and heavily supported here north of the border and remembers there was great interest in him facing the legendary Argentine.

Getting dusted by Monzon isn't the worst result. Most did. He could box a bit too...ask his Mrs.

Unlike his son, Tony was actually quite popular Oz.

No disgrace in losing to Monzon, perhaps the greatest middle that ever pulled on a glove.

remember as a kid me old man and twenty miners listening to the broadcast on radio here in the isa and none of them were going for the legendary argentine master. mixed mob the twenty were - irish , brits , aussies , hungarians , greeks , huck finns ,germans , aboriginals and italians and all were on tony mundine . ozstriker your wrong on this one mate. tony came to the isa in 95 to support boxing and league and was mobbed and warmly welcomed by all , he offered advice freely , signed all autographs and sparred against a coupled of local up and comers .

Gotta disagree..... Remember.... This was my era....I was there.

In fact .... Tony was to be my first Am fight as he cut a swathe through the Am ranks.

I trained at Laming's Gym.... just down the road from where Tony trained (Ern Maquillan's)

Perhaps he was popular north of the border....certainly not in Sydney..... as evidenced by the crowd erupting when Kahu Mahunga KO'd him...

His trainer was a total shonk..... and those that new Mundine personally....know that he grew to be a big head who believed his own publicity.

He started off as a reasonable kid..... but Macquillan's influence got to him

Later..... his true colours came to the fore when he started running protection rackets in Sydney (Well known fact)

Mate you were there, absolutely. Perhaps he had less support south of the border, and in Sydney. Might also explain why he fought a number of times in Qld.

He may well have mate. He certainly fought here plenty of times. Incidently his son has done the same. His next bout will be north of the border too.

I also was under the impression Tony was well liked and respected...my uncles and their mates seem to think so.

I've never heard a bad word about his career, aside from the ridiculous glass-jaw comments.

Tony Mundine was a very popular Australian and this is the first time I've ever read anything to the contrary. He was the complete opposite to his son as his personality almost demonstrated introvert behaviour.A man of few words in the public arena demonstrated a mean aggressive streak in the ring.A fighter with a killer instinct who rarely took a step backwards.
He was one of the ATG's of Australian boxing.Saw most of his fights and as Bobby Sinn said his "glass jaw"was the only point of any derogatory remarks and I agree, they were ridiculous.Popular Australian bloke and popular Australian fighter.

    Really?

How so?? Mahanga and Rodriguez?? For a bloke with a glass chin, he survived pretty bloody well against ample world class fighters. You do realise that he'd sweated down to weight throughout the better part of his career? 96 fights with few legit KO by's..

    Hardly a glass jaw.
