I really do like to watch their breakdowns of grappling positions. Me not being a BJJ blackbelt myself. What they said about fedor's training is probably true to an extent, back in the day fedor probably trained for positions like that all the time.
Being on top is different from being bottom, Nog never had a crushing top game, not every black belt grapples the same way. I could tell as it happened fight Fedor was only using an exposive upa to escape and it wasn't going to work. It left me wondering why he didn't even try an elbow escape or anyting else.
If Fedor had a decent corner the fight may have gone differently, Don't just throw the over-hand right in desperation, set it up! His best chance is taking you down, show some restraint, lateral movement and mobility are your friends, use them! Horrible corner.
I think the "Fedor has stayed still while others have moved past him" argument is incorrect; A 32ish year old man who has only 3 less wins than couture dominated him for one round and the legacy is ignored. A fighters prime has more to do with the number of fights he's had than his age.
I don't think anybody questions his legacy especially till 2006 when he was fighting the best. What he did will never be repeated, I just got frustrated with the quality of fights he took for years for somebody that was the best. And when M1 global was involved it just got worse for holding out for contracts etc. Fedor spent more time negotiating then fighting, I'm sure it became a distraction for him.
Maybe Randy has better wins since 2006? Or Lesner? Or Mir? I'm not sure who in the MMA HW roster has better wins than FE since 2006. I could be wrong, I'm not the final expert on these matters...
Fedor was at that level where fans feel obligated to nitpick at his career choices. This happens when your the best. Not that they are completely wrong, as long as they see that he was doing the best with what he had after the collapse of PRIDE.
Since 2006, Cain, Dos Santos definatly do, I think it's wide open for Overeem ,Werdum,Silva,Karitonov,Lesnar and Carwin. Fedors best win since 2006 is prob AA who is on an 0-4 streak but at least is a dangerous fighter.
Personally I always think it is important to judge on how he performed pre fight. Before fighting Fedor Arlovski was a top 5 HW imo. He had beaten two very solid guys in Rothwell and Nelson and was on a 5 fight win streak. So I think it was a very good win for Fedor.
So who exactly has Cain won against thats top class? Brock? dont make me laugh. The top fighters are Overeem, Josh, Fedor, Werdum, Karitonov, Bigfoot and JDS........ Dana and Zuffa's contract has kept Cain from fighting the best of the best. Instead he had to face a guy without skills/experience, and if hes lucky a guy who cant even last out 4 minutes. The only real competition in the UFC is JDS. Cain's inactivity, lack of experience, lack of top competition should push him outside the top 10. The bias media and lack of knowledge from MMA fans though along with Zuffa zombies have really elevated Cain far beyond what he truely deserves.
