Mayweather a Gamer, British Fans Disgraceful

Although I wouldn't boo the anthem I know many that would. I hate the cliche 'it's a culture thing', but it really is. As a poster pointed out above it is more of a pantomime boo than anything else, and it's happened for years in europe generally in alot of sports.

If you really were offended by it then I really do think that you either

a - didn't understand there was no malice involved and it's all part of the pre-fight build up and bravado

or

b - you are oversensitive to something so trivial, and it is of course your right to be so.

 

Overtrivial it may be to you and the British fans who made the trip to Las Vegas, however they are guests in another country and as guests certain standards of behaviour should apply. There is no excuse for this kind of thing.

 

I think the USA are perhaps a little over sensitive.

It happens to our national anthem (God save the Queen) all the time abroad. Do we cry and get offended? No. We give it back.

That fight had an atmosphere that was made by British fans. The same fans that CHEERED Hatton and sang his name just after he had been bounced off the ropes and beaten to the ground. It's called passion, and we wouldn't mind one bit if Americans actually showed some.

It was a boxing match, your guy did a brilliant job of knocking Hatton out and all a lot of you do is complain your anthem was boo'd? Boohoo.

 

I would like to see what would have happened if a bunch of Germans booed God Save the Queen at a football match.

 

It was even nicer to hear the brits chanting "your supposed to be at home!",
terrible support from the yanks...
also, why shout USA? it's not about nationalities, it's about the fighters, regardless of where they're from.
the hatton fights were shouting and singing things about *hatton* not britain.. they booed over the national anthem because it was being played for the oppoisition, not because they hate america

 

That shows how much you know...ie nothing.

 

I have no idea why they do it, and it is pretty disgraceful. I have been at a few England games where I have cringed whilst some moronic fans boo the oppositions anthem (the Croatia game was an example).

I don't know why some do it, and I am positive Hatton would not endorse it.

I also just want to say kudos to Mayweather for his gracious behaviour after the fight, he has gone up in my estimation.

 

i think we're starting to get to the bottom of why americans have such a bad image around the world at this moment in time.

 

I don't agree with this, a lot of countries are very proud of their national anthem, and wouldn't understand that there was no malice involved, and there was no reason why they would understand this.

To a lot of people it just seems like they are being disprecetful to another country, which you have to appreciate when you are abroad.

 

Theres been quite a bit of critcism over here about the actions of those 'fans' that were booing during the anthem, no excuses it was wrong, but..

lets hold on to a bit of perspective, making grandiose sweeping statements about the british/english national pysche based on that is little bit coming from the good ole us of a, good international relations are not exactly high on the american national agenda now are they?

British fans are a bunch of drunk uneducated boxing fans. They let the liquor get the best of them, and act like asses. That being said they are very supportive of their fighters, and party the whole way through. THats why Frank Warren is laughing all the way to the bank putting on exhibitions for the most part with Joe Calzahge. He would have done the same thing with Hatton had he stayed with him.
It was the same situation with Frank Bruno. I was at the MGM when he fought Tyson and the atomosphere was exactly the same, and even after poor Frankie Bruno got brutalized, they kept singing and singing, and drinking.

 

it's called support numbnuts, we support our teams/fighters win, lose or draw. we never stop backing them and are not fair weather fans.

 

They do it. We boo theirs too.

Matthew, I get the feeling your don't follow football, mate.

This happens during every international match, seriously, and we Brits aren't even the worse culprits, you should hear some of the Eastern Europeans.

It's show, bravado, passion and pantomime.

 

In regards to booing the national anthem, I'm curious, have any of yall heard anything like that??

I find it very interesting, because I was on another forum (not a boxing, or even a sports forum at all) talkin about it the other day. The interesting thing about this, was that all the Americans, not out of a since of pride in their nation, or anger at someone booing THEIR national anthem, just thought the IDEA of booing someone elses anthem was terribly offensive.

The most common response from Americans was something like "Thats really ****ed up, I don't see how you could boo the national anthem of any country"

A couple of people even said "I wouldn't even boo the anthem of a country we were at war with"

The international posters on the other hand, didn't seem bothered by it. A common response was "Well thats kind of rude, but come on, its boxing, its one person v.. another. Its a contest,, so people are feeling competitive, its only natural"

May I ask some posters from the UK:

What did you think about people booing the US national anthem? In fact, forget that its the US anthem. If Floyd had come to Manchester, and brouoht a few thousand fans that boo'd "God Save The Queen", how would it make you feel?

I'm not trying to start an argument or anything like that, I'm just curious as to how people from UK and especially Britain, or in particular England, feel about this issue.
