Those like John McCain, who ignorantly advocate a federal boxing commission would do well to remember this is an international sport, so it's no impossibility to find a venue willing to accommodate if the money's available. He made a huge issue over the Thyrolar overdose against Holmes as being the major reason for his zombie masquerade, and die hard supporters bought it.
I watched this fight a long time ago and I remember I had Berbick winning by a strange score of 4 rounds to 1 with 5 rounds even. Maybe I'll watch it again sometime next week.
Bok, Tuff and rugged Berbick really did very little damage to an already ailing Ali in 1981... If anything transpired in terms of hurt, Ali sustained a case of sore ribs afterward... I scored it basically 6 to 4 Berbick over Ali after 10 so-so rds.... Ali still boxed and moved, but his jab was a push and his leg speed was reduced to normal... Berbick won by hustling over the 10 rds and being a tad more busy overall... Nothing fancy or special occurred... MR.BILL:bbb
That's more or less how I had it. Berbick won four of the last five for me, since Ali had virtually stopped fighting at that point. But when he still had any gas he got the better of Berbick. Somehow he even managed to rock him a bit occassionaly. This with no speed, not much reflexes left and no snap to his punches.
He only said that because he's a Tyson hater Tyson beat Berbick so he wants to discredit Mike by saying Berbick was a "bum". He was good and much better than the crap heavyweight contenders we have nowadays.
Actually, Ali's later fights is a good watch to get a hold of his technique. When he no longer had the physical abilities to pull off his more fantastic moves you can see the fundamentals shining through more clearly. For example, look at this clip of the final round against Shavers. All through the round an exhausted Ali gives Shavers angles and rolls with his punches, which rarely lands clean in this round, and towards the end he really puts on a clinic. Watch him tearing Shavers up at mid-range from 2.00 onwards in the clip. It's beautiful how he does it, considering the shape he's in (he says himself he doesn't remember anything of the fight after the second round): [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-Yi-7YdmtU[/ame]
the man was finished long before those fights.cant watch those last few fights again.ali took too many shots in all his last fights
Shavers told Larry Merchant that he felt he won the fight. But I believe he changed his mind after watching it on a video.
Again, I bought the video from the record store yrs ago and it has all the behind scenes that clearly show Ali looking ample in weight and slurring his words... Ali was a shell by 1981... He was also very sick with Park's syndrome, but didn't truly realize it yet.... MR.BILL:hat
