In both areas of punch resistance (ability to withstand from a big shot, and to recover from one) he showed to be far above average.

In terms of withstanding, the fact that he didn't lose consciousness separates him from most other boxers. You put 99% of bantamweights in that same circumstance, taking that same shot, and they go to sleep.

In terms of recuperation, the fact that he got up and was looking to try and fight on (and somehow actually seemed to be alert enough to do so) separates him from the remaining 1%.

All respect to Montiel but I don't think he was aware he was at the time he got up. It appeared that he actually went to sleep for a few seconds from the time he got hit to when he hit the canvas and rolled for a couple of seconds. Woke up from the nightmare and got up in confusion. I say that because of his reaction to the ref and lack of reaction to Donaire rushing him at the last second before the ref stopped it.

There is no shame he went to sleep cause he got hit with a perfectly placed shot with force behind it while not at all expecting it. Just about any other guy in the division would have reacted the same if not worse.

Because from the tone of your post, it seemed that the ref did not allow Montiel to show that he can turn the tide and stopped it prematurely.

I highly doubt this. I think generally the effect is the same. KOs like that are devastating physically and much more mentally...

Look at Ricky Hatton, after almost 2 years he still haven't fully recovered yet from PAC's brutal punch. He's been in and out of depression stages since then...

It's the sad reality in the brutal sport of boxing...

 

Well, I've never seen anyone get up and make it before the 10 count after being hurt like that. Kudos to Montiel. And with a tiny body frame like his, it's kinda hard to imagine him having 34 KO's. But he gets it done. I've grown to be a bigger fan.

I hope Donaire joins the beasts at 126 soon enough. There really isn't much for him at 118-122 or at least I can't think of any standout fights for him there at this moment. He's already 28 and isn't getting any younger. Should be fun watching him jump in the pit with Lopez, Gamboa, and Ponce De Leon.
