Very impressive knockout from Donaire but is really half of what's being said warranted? I was under the impression the vast majority of posters had already predicted a Donaire victory, many of whom thought it was be an easy, quick nights work. That's exactly what happened. The size disparity was obvious the moment the two entered the ring, and Montiel hasn't been consistently outstanding over the last few years. He's been guilty of some sub par performances, and was being out-boxed prior to finding the knockout blow against Hasegawa. I hold the Martinez/Williams knockout in higher regard for a number of reasons. Martinez wasn't the guy holding the physical advantages, much the opposite, and yet he completely laid out a guy who'd never come close to being stopped before with one shot despite not being known as a hard hitter. Moreover, whereas Montiel actually beat the count, Williams wouldn't have gotten up if the referee counted to 100. Do I think Montiel is harder to beat at Bantamweight than Williams is at Middleweight? No, I don't. Donaire has crawled up the rankings, he's now rightfully being acknowledged as one of the finest fighters on the planet, but he hasn't overtaken Martinez in my estimation, and neither has he indicated to me he's good enough to go up to 126lbs and fight the likes of JuanMa and Gamboa. :good Calm down, 'fellas.
He's a great "filipino" boxer, but the first thing he'll be called when he loses is another American hypejob.
he got a good win but it didnt warrant 1000 donaire vs.... threads and theres no way he is p4p number 3
after any big fight/impressive victory the board is full of threads about that fighter. people still have the buzz and it'll calm down when another big fights happens or is made
I've seen a lot of knockouts. I've never seen someone convulsing like Montiel on the mat. A legend was born that night.
according to ESB 118 Donaire beats 122 Pacquiao because he has more "skill" but 122 Pac is able to beat the likes of Mab,JMM, & EM @ 126 off raw talent alone So that must mean (118 )Donaire's Skill > (126)Mab, JMM, EM's skill its insane.
The credit he is getting is acceptable, but its silly to say he beats a prime pacquiao or floyd. He deserves the credit but lets not go that far to say he's an ATG yet, but im sure he will be
The point is that donaire looked many many leagues above a very good fighter in montiel. Also its far harder to score devasting knockouts at those lower weights. It was the manner of the win that was so important. Donaire hardy throws a punch and you can just see from the opening bell that he is seeing what montiel has and then boom, a perfect counter shot. I think this fight may be the one people look back on and say, that was where we saw an ATG arrive in the ring in years to come. His ring IQ and reactions in the ring are so high compared to his peers. If he carries his atheletic qualities up the weights he will dominate.
It's the same reactionary nonsense you get on here whenever a fighter scores an impressive victory - all that Donaire seemingly has to worry about now is coming up with his induction speech for Canasota. It was a spectacular performance and I have him #5 on my P4P list but, as usual, a lot of people are getting carried away.
If he becomes undisputed bantam champ, makes a successful leap to 122 and maybe 126, then we'll start talking ATG-ness.
Donaire couldve retired after knocking Darchinyan out and he would still been considered an ATG. Come on seriously theres no one better than him other than Pacquiao all time.
