What a step up! I think Rogers still very embryonic stand-up could see him suffer here.

Too quick? Or does the wages Roger received justify such a sharp incline in quality of opposition?

Very, very intriguing fight. If it's on the Melendez, Nick Diaz (Paul Daley? If he wins) card it could be a very good night indeed.

I'd expect Mousasi to blast him out at this stage to be honest. odd, but brave, matchmaking IMO.

I hope Gegard stays away from making it a BJJ match as he will have a resounding standing advantage. Roger has huge stones to step up this fast. War Mousasi.

Whilst Mousasi is not incompetant on the deck, this is basically style vs style. Gracie, a rudimentary striker, needs to set up his takedowns without stepping into harms way.

He is sublime on the floor, Gegards tdd isn't great, he needs to strike and get out there again.

What a matchup (if it comes off!) :happy

It is. Im more interested to see how Mousasi deals with Gracie on the ground than vice versa on the feet

Wow horrible match up for Mousasi if true. Mousasi major problem has always been his takedown defense as we saw against guys like King Mo and Sokoudjou. If Gracie gets him down then he's staying down and I think Roger walks away with a limb.

I think this underlines the lack of depth that Strikeforce have !!!!

Dont mean to sound like blind hate , but its a ****in disgusting match up , would be very very funny if Gracie tapped him though

At 205 they really have little depth. I thought Cavalcante, Hendo, Mo and Gegard were all too big a step up for Roger at this stage, but apart from say, Mike Kyle, were else would he go?

I'd go for Sobral first, then Mousasi if they're adament at moving him fast and hoping name recognition will get them more viewers.

Gracie is so talented though, I wouldn't be completely surprised if he subbed all of these guys  But it's his defence standing up he needs to refine, it's not like he needs to start banging people out, just comfortable enough whilst he's trying to get it to the ground.

Bizarre matchup at this stage, but very, very intriguing nonetheless. With Jon Jones leading the 'new breed' in UFCs 205 division, it seems Strikeforce are going completely the other way by having a pure BJJ phenom leading theirs!

He is the quintissential phenom in JJ terms , im not really going to say much about the rest of his game because its going over old ground , and everyone knows he is severely flawed on the feet .

Strikeforce should not be making this fight , end of discussion , they should be looking to aqcuire cannon fodder for Gracie at this stage , maybe a less talented striker , with little KO power , all depends on what there view on Gracie is , if there adamant he's he's the future (at 29 is that reality ??) then the Mousasi fight in there opinion will be just the start . Or are they just short of opponents for Mousasi and quite happy to feed the moderatley well known Gracie to him to make his opponent choice credible ???

But ultimatley your right , in any case , if this goes to the ground ............. ouch !!!

My contribution to your previous thread on this subject mate:

I'm not a fan of MMA fighters being rushed up the card so quickly. At 4-0 Gracie is still unlocking his potential and has a lot of learning to do. $75,000 a fight may be a lot for Strikeforce, but if they want Roger to become a star they can sell events with then they need to suck it up. At this stage a loss to Mousasi does little for Mousasi and absolutely nothing for Roger.

That said, if he takes this fight you can't question his fighting spirit. The man needs a wheelbarrow to carry his balls around in.

He could win but its an incredibly stupid match up. Let Roger grow. I'm all for people stepping up but it is simply too soon. These guys need to be ready to reign against the very best once they hit the big time. King Mo lost his title in his first fight even though he beat Mousasi. Roger could be given some tough fighters but not someone who is top 5 at his best.
