A classier way for a champion to have gone out is to have said, "I've given everything I have in this sport. This is a young man's sport, as I dont have the passion for it any longer."

That would have been a more noble way to retire, but instead he lets on that there is going to be a rematch, and then pulls the rug out under everyone and comes up with, "he did'nt beat me on my worst night mumbo jumbo." as if the fans were content with the way the fight ended and there was a definitive winner in a fight he was losing on the scorecards is stopped on a cut. -----outright pathetic.:verysad

Lewis is right. Vitali had his chance & couldn't avoid getting mangled. Some people just want to see legends fight on too long & get hurt.

What good would it have done Vitali to beat an old, past his prime Lewis in a rematch anyway (assuming he could win)?

From financial point of view it makes a lot of logic. He got a lot of money money for relatively easy fight against Tyson. Against Vitali he almost got floored for lesser money, and (although I think he would be better prepared for rematch) Vitali had at least realistic underdog chance.

Lewis had reached the natural end of his career, and he likely took Vitali much too lightly. But a diminished Lewis still came away with the win. Considering his age, wealth and achievements at that point in time, I really can't blame Lewis for not having much motivation for a rematch against a high-calibre opponent who may well have subsequently beat him, and over whom he already had a victory - that'd make very little sense, Lewis was too smart to go down that path.
