The Ring magazine seems very strange to me sometimes in its ratings.

You had Bute as the #1 SMW and Ward at #2 etc. Now for Ward to have gone to #2, he beat #1 Kessler and rightfully went above Kessler but Kessler is Wards only big win and overall Bute has a better resume than Ward even though not better than Froch or Kessler, so Bute became #1. Now Kessler beat Froch and was #3.
Froch beat Abraham coming off a loss and the Ring put Froch above Kessler after Froch had just lost to Kessler. Then Ward beat either Bika a fighter Bute had beaten years previously or Green and the Ring put Ward above Bute and made him #1.

Now this is where it seems strange to me.
The Ring is an American based magazine which understandably focuses on American fighters. Now America at this time have NO Ring champions.
Well chances are that the Super 6 final will be between Froch and Ward. Well the Ring sometimes lets the #1 against the #3 be for the Ring title.
It looks like the Ring has a plan in that if Ward was #2 and beat Froch at #3 he couldnt be a Ring champion and if Froch won he couldnt be either, but if they make Ward the #1 for no real reason other than for a win over Bika who Bute had already beaten they could make the winner the Ring champ and fight for their title.
The Ring had no reason to put Ward above Bute or Froch above Kessler. Ratings are supposed to be based on results.

    Next...
Pascal was #5 LHW after his 2 wins over Diaconu, then beats Branco and finds himself at #3 with Dawson at #1. I cant remember what the shuffle was in fairness to get Pascal such a rise after beating old Branco but it looks like The Ring was hoping to get a Ring champion at LHW.
Now Pascal beat Dawson and became Ring champ. Hopkins has just drawn with Pascal and become #1 LHW which is understandable, but Dawson has been moved to #3 and Cloud to #2 for beating former LMW title challenger Zuniga? why should Cloud have jumped Dawson with a win over Zuniga? Surely if Cloud gets so highly rated for a win over Zuniga to jump Dawson why has Ward jumped ahead of Bute when Bute scored a 4th round KO over Zuniga previously.

Now if Hopkins beats Pascal in the rematch theres a good chance Hopkins would retire, then do you think there would be a good chance that Pascal would go to #3 with Dawson and Cloud becoming #1 and #2 respectively fighting for the Ring title or do you think Pascal would still be rated above Dawson and Cloud?

So what are the reasons? ie Cloud, Dawson, Bute, Kessler, Ward, Froch

A long thread I know, but give it a go and try to be truthful and not bias

making the winner of Froch vs Ward the ring champ while bypassing Bute would be a joke. Just like making Wlad the ring champ while bypassing his brother was a joke.

This #1 vs #3 rule sucks. It should be #1 vs #2 and that's it. And I would even go further and say that sometimes #1 vs #2 is not enough if #3 is up there with them at the top.

There is something I missed, why wasnt bute in the supersix to begin with? now it seems he had the easy route while waiting for the winner...

Can you see what I meant though in that Froch lost to Kessler and shouldnt have been elevated above him. I like Froch, Froch is one of my favourite fighters but the ratings are meant to be based on results. Same as Ward above Bute and Cloud above Dawson

Well thats another debate. Really although it has been easier for Bute I wouldnt say its by as much as many would make out. Sure Ward drew a tough fight first against Kessler but Ward had home advantage and Kessler is an unwell double vision suffering fighter who Ward could foul against. Then Ward fought Green who lost to Miranda who Bute beat (as did Ward previously) then Ward fought Bika who hadnt had many rounds in a while (and had been beaten by Bute previously), Next Ward is fighting Abraham who has just had a injury victory after suffering 2 losses and isnt as good a SMW as in truth what Magee is

How can anyone bypass Bute when he hasn't even fought anyone in the top five yet if even the top ten. Ward is going to punch his ticket as soon as he gets the Super Six tourney squared away.

I agree Bute hasnt fought the top guys yet but look at resumes overall

Bute beat Bika - better than Ward,
    Miranda - better than Ward,
    Andrade twice,
    Joppy,
Zuniga, better than Cloud and Cloud beating Zuniga has put him above Dawson
    Brinkley
Berrio - Holds a win over Steiglitz
Next Magee who is a European champ and world rated fighter who hasnt lost in 10 fights
    In world title fights.
You could also note Mock, Tatvosyan and Salem

    Ward has beaten
Kessler - A very good win better than any name on Bute resume but remember that Kessler was an unwell fighter
    Miranda
Green - who lost to Miranda
    Bika
Next Abraham on a winning run of 1 injury victory and then 2 losses the last being very decisive

    You could also note Buchanan

Now Wards victory over Kessler isnt better overall than Andrade, Berrio, Zuniga etc

    Agreed.

Ward is fighting the best of the division in the S6 while Bute is fighting..not the best.

Ward has beaten Kessler but how is Green, Bika and Abraham at this time considered the best of the division. You must highly rate Calzaghe?

Kessler stomps all over Bute's three best wins combined.

Plus, Bika was ranked #6 at 168 when Ward beat him, he was #8 when Bute beat him. While I give Bute the edge here for fighting him first, Ward fought Miranda well before Bute. Besides, see first statement.

The Green win is a better win head to head than any of Bute's wins spare for perhaps Andrade II, Bika, and Miranda.

I don't care if Abraham is 1-2 as a super middle. If you can, name which of Bute's wins would be more impressive than any Ward over Abraham outcome.

I think Bute is very good, but Ward, Kessler, and Froch should be ranked above him, the order very debatable.

Do you think The Ring were hoping to get an American Ring champion when they had Dawson at #1 and Pascal moved to #3 when they fought?

Do you think The Ring magazine are looking to get Ward as a Ring champion? We will see if Ward - Froch is for the Ring title if both come through their next fights

I agree with this, in most circumstances.
