Is Canelo being underrated now due to the hype?

I have been a fan of Canelo since i saw his first fight. He obviously has some tools that will make him a top fighter in the future. His composure is unreal for a 20 year old. I think some of the hate also comes because he is not our typical Mexican fighter who comes forward non stop with exciting aggression.

I just watched the fight again last night and i have to say i was impressed. Right after watching it live i was very disappointed he didnt TKO Hatton and got hit too much. However i made some observations.
-If you watch the first few rounds you see Canelo taking a similar approach to what PBF did against Shane. He would press forward but never really make himself vulnerable to big shots. Obviously he wasnt landing as flush as PBF and thats because PBF is the most precise fighter in the sport and Mosley is alot easier to find than Hatton.
-After those first rounds you can tell Canelo could see Hatton would not be able to hurt him and even if he did right after Hatton would land flush he would back up and cover up.
-Hattons defense is awkward as hell. He really left very little angles for Canelo to hit him with. He would jab throw hooks then do something similar to what Darchynian does with his crablike defense. Also he would turn his body and leave only a wide left hook or a straight right to nearly the back of the head for Canelo open. Also that left hook he was blocking pretty well with his hands. The right hands were sneaking in from time to time but like i said they looked borderline illegal at times.

Right after the fight i came on here and agreed with people on how it was not a good performance but in retrospect. He beat a decent fighter with a difficult style 12 rounds to 0. He even had him hurt at times despite not being able to find him cleanly for the majority of the fight.

I think i will have to wait to see his next fight. He is still 20 years old and needs to take it easy to be built properly. However next time they should give him someone with a less difficult style.
Also is it just me or are those left to the body his best shot. He hurt Hatton with it a few times and i have no idea why he didnt throw much. Maybe its just his age.

Oh yea i do agree he is very overrated in the Mexican media however you can not deny that you see shades of greatness in him.

Yes he is being underrated... Not everyone is gonna get kod and hes getting to much slack for not knocking out Hatton... This has more to do with Hattons awkradness,Toughness and balls then Alvarez lacking skills or power.

Sorry but his defense sucks, cotto/martinez/pwill/kirkland/angulo/margarito/mayweather/pacquaio and maybe even foreman/mosley/berto beat him at 154

no nobodies talking about that but it's more to do with canelo's defense and how hatton seemed to hit him at will just didnt have any power what so ever

but that maybe due to the way the fight went, alvarez knew hatton couldnt hurt him so he let hatton hit him if it meant he could get in and land his best punhces. I was more worried about him being flat footed a mover takes him apart.

shouldnt they? they all have way more experience and he hasnt fought a guy in that ball park yet, my only criticism of Canleo is that he was handed a title while still in the prospect stage and hadnt beaten a top 10 guy

Thats the only thing critics can jump on and alot of that has to do with Canelo not respecting Hattons power, and Alvarez just wanting to finish him..... One other thing Canelo might have to learn the hard way like Barrera did against Junior Jones.... Canelo is a True Mexican fighter at heart and actually loves to mix it up, ive study him closely and he does have defense when he chooses... But i agree he will have to sharpen it up when he goes against bangers like Angulo,Kirkland and even good (but not big) punchers like WIlliams,Cotto..... As for Foreman i have no doubt Canelo would handle him in his next fight.

Exactly. His defense always has seemed fine to me. He only gets hit when he mixes it up which lets face it only PBF can get away with not getting hit while mixing it up. Watch the first few rounds of that fight and Canelo very rarely got hit. After he saw Hatton didnt have much behind his punches then he started slacking off on his D and just marching forward. I think thats why towards the end of the fight i was disappointed with him until i rewatched it again.

Hell if a guy cant hurt you why not just walk him down. Im sure it was even more to do because Hattons style was awkward and wanted to get the KO so he just said **** it and just wanted to trade to try to open Hatton up.

he's way overrated, a guy that is not the top five boxers in his own division and he's wearing a champion belt... he's top 15 jr middleweight right now

Underrated? Heck no...haven't seen anyone really underate him. He gets props for what he is at the moment, an unfinished product that needs more work.

    I think hes overrated.

I think he has the potential, but its too early to be giving this kid all this to live up to.
