Looked possible a Cotto left just before THE hook could have snagged Mayo's thumb....maybe a stinger type deal?
That's what I'm thinking at this point. Your adrenaline is already on overdrive at that point, so how the **** could he have thought, immediately after being rocked in the 12 "hmmm I think I'll act like my hand is hurt to play it off". But then again, watching the post fight interviews, in the ring, Mayorga confirms he hurt his left hand, then literally starts using it to rub his head, wipe his face with his towel etc, with the "hurt" hand. So that makes me think he could have be bullshitting. That or he didn't hurt it as bad as he thought maybe? :think
What difference does it make? It was the last round and he was getting beaten easily. Hand injury,no hand injury,it wouldnt have made a difference to the outcome. Anyway, even if he did hurt his hand,SO WHAT? If Mayorga was half as tough as he makes himself out to be,it shouldnt have mattered. Heck,I once saw Danny Williams dislocate his arm and go on to win a fight!
He was hit hard by Cotto but at the same time he did feel something in his hand. You can see from his reaction while going down. He is watching his hand while going down. A double whammy basically. I'm not sure though how he injured his hand. But it looks like a legit injury.
He will be remembered as one of the most entertaining and colorful characters in boxing, one with a big mouth and a big pair of balls. A dude who once climbed to the top of the boxing world with his balls and a little boxing. I will certainly miss him.
