I am sure it happened at some point but it would have been an aberation. Even if a guy was out cold his seconds could literaly drag him up to the scratch line, do whatever they wanted to revive him and they had 30 or 38 seconds depending in the durastiction. Then if the fighter was still unsteady on his feet, all he had to do was go down without being hit and he got another 30-38 seconds.

Now how many knockouts have there honestly been under queensbury rules where the fallen fighter could not have made a 38 second count assisted? There are examples like Braddock Louis, but nobody here would predict that Louis would be able to repeat the feat in a rematch.

Quick knockouts were virtualy unknown under LPR and they started verry abruptly when Queensbury rules were introduced. John L Sullivan was the first heavyweight to realy capitalize on the new rules, and probably the most destructive queensbury champion before Jack Dempsey. He demolished Charlie Mitchell in three rounds in a queensbury bout, but could not put him away in three hours in an LPR bout. Why do you think that was?

 

that's a pretty interesting comparison and one that certainly helps when comparing the rules sets

given that i know next to nothing about the era, did mitchell fade significantly between bouts?

 

It has to be acknowledged that Sullivan declined between the queensbury bout and the LPR bout.

Even so, Sullivan was seen as being almost unbeatable under queensbury rules at this stage. People either fought to survive or got anihilated.

You seem to think:

A-That I have a problem with a white fighter winning this tournament.

and

B-That I place a lot of importance on the outcome of this tournament.

Neither is in fact the case.

If people were arguing that Wladamir Klitschko would beat Jack Johnson under this ruleset, then I would take an equaly categorical stance against it. Perhaps you have not read my defences of Sam Langford and Joe Louis in other threads?

Ultimately this series of threads is frustrating, because the outcome is being led by the ignorant. I have to explain the ruleset under which the fantasy fights are taking place to people, before I can even argue with them. Said people have already made up their minds before they even knew what London Prize Ring Rules were.

Can you not understand why I find that frustrating?
