In light of Max Kellerman's declaration that Sergio Martinez is a "superfighter," what approach do you guys feel would be most effective against him? I'll submit that the Paul Williams approach--pressure, pressure, and some more pressure coupled with crisp closer quarters punching-- offers the closest thing we have to a "blueprint" at this juncture.
Well, Williams got tagged with one looping, overhand left. It's not as if he got beaten to a pulp over 7 or 8 rounds and then KO'd.
Considering his two losses were against pressure fighters who can do 100 punches around... I guess pressure fighters are his weakness. Doesn't hurt to have someone who has an iron chin or guards his chin, too
The Williams approach was making Martinez move up in weight and fight a very difficult styled opponent on short notice. When Maravilla had time to prepare properly, when know how far the approach took Williams.
I don't think that preparation time was a hugely significant factor. I think it had more to do with Martinez knowing Williams ridiculously predictable style. He had Williams sussed out by the second fight, as opposed to the first bout, where Sergio had never fought anyone like Williams before.
A Floyd approach would suit an opponent better. (Unless a bigger man than Sergio can impose themself like Williams tried to.)
Well I mean you could see the guy trying sometimes, but that's when Sergio would put himself out of range and Williams would get tagged repeatedly with Sergio right hooks, so Williams would have no choice, but to infight, which he likes to do anyway in the first fight. In the 2nd, fight, instead of using the volume punching and occasional slaps he does, he opened up some more and wanted to trade powershots with Sergio and started getting caught. Froch has the best chance of beating Sergio. Great chin, volume puncher.
