When I think of 'good head movement' I tend to think of people like Pernell Whitaker. However in the build up to Mayweather-Hatton, and even after it people have repeatedly called Hatton someone with good head movement in reaction to punches, or when Mike Tyson was very young he had great head movement when he was trying to get on the inside. I don't get this though, the only real head movement I saw from HAtton was when he was rushing in. The first few rounds it was effective enough, but he always used the same head movement when coming in, and Floyd figured it out very quickly and of course we all know what happened in the 10th round... So how can we call Hatton's head movement 'good' if he really just does the same thing over and over again? Perhaps I'm wrong, I'm really just curious. And for a second question: Could the wise posters of ESB recommend me some fighters to look up film of with some great head and upper body movement?
If you want to see good head movement, look at prime versions of Roberto Duran, Pernell Whitaker, Mike Tyson, Joe Frazier, James Toney, and Wilfred Benitez. These guys were great when it came to moving their head and slipping punches. Hatton does not have excellent headmovement. It's decent, but he doesn't have enough of it, nor does he hold his hands high enough, to beat top p4p defensive counterpunchers. I see him struggling, perhaps losing, to Witter or Malignaggi.
I've wondered about this too. I've seen people move their heads around a lot, but sometimes it seems to do no good whatsover. It just makes them look silly, and they get tagged even more since their feet are stationary. Other times it seems to work. What is it that separates useless head movement from effective head movement? An example of someone who moved their head a ton to no effect is Taylor vs. Pavlik. An example of effective head movement that looked the same to me but with a different outcome is Sugar Ray Leonard in SRL vs. Hearns II. Well, I guess ray got tagged a bunch there too... Michael Nunn is a better example. Against Iran Barkley, he just hung out on the ropes with his hands below his waist and dodged punches with nothing but head movement.
Never seen anyone with boxing knowldge call Hatton good head movement! The biggest problem with Hatton and this is so noticeable in the TSZYU fight is his lack of lateral head movement if hatton had alteral head movement and not thought eh coudlw alk through anyhting then he would of done better against mayweahter, maywetaher realised ahtton would just wlak straight in tall and thats when he started using the right cross repeatedly on hatton. I genuinely believe hatton thought bfore that fight that nobody could knock him out but boy has he paid an enormous price.
You didn't see Hatton's great head movements? You didn't see Hatton's head snapping back everytime he gets smothered by PBF's punches? :huh That's head movement . . . for the HATTONITES to see. As to the second question . . . you might want to add Leonard, Ali and Hearns to the names they have already mentioned. These fighters are pretty good at making the opponent miss without using two hands protection and rolling with the punches.
You want to see inch perfect head movement...watch Tszyu's amateur fights. I think youtube has his forrest fight online. Any of his amateur fights are things of beauty. I like some of Zab's head movement as well. When his head is screwed on straight, he looks a million dollars.
As far as I'm concerned, Jenna Jameson would define good head movement but let's not spread ourselves too thin. A prime example would be Duran at his prime (primeprime). Unlike Hatton, his rhythm was hard to pick up.
Well Hatton used a bit of head movement in the first 3 or 4 rounds, but forgot it as the rounds went in as he got more desperate. It also didn't help he kept his hands down at his chest.
Dempsey had the best head movement in the heavyweight division. Unpredictible, rythym breaking, he could slip punches and get inside perfectly.
wowowowowoow tbh i wish i knew more about Whitaker. ****ing insane. btw whats the deal with the ref for that last knockout? waiting for the guy to die to stop the fight?
There are different ways head movement is used , Tyson in his prime was one of the greatest specimens of headmovement , if he timed a head movement corect and made a guy pay , the fight was likely over . Duran could do this but when he was standiing upright ! These are examples of headmovement when being used in conjunction with offense . Other examples are ones like Sweetpea and Beniitez , these were defensive masters , (Duran could do this aswell) , Willie Pep was really something special with the head movement , and every other defensive movement in their is . I wouldnt say it is Mayweather's forte , might be wrong though
