hatton's style

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by blacklikesunday, Dec 14, 2007.

  1. hi, i'm new here, how's it going? i'm from aussie.

i actually watched the hatton vs tsyu fight yesterday[ yeah i know i'm late] as i was interested in seeing hatton who i hadn't seen before. hardly get to see any boxing nowadays as its all on cable tv.

anyway i thought he was quite messy in his style and did a lot of holding, is that typical of the man? it can sure get annoying sometimes.
however, saying that about him he did do the business against kosta so it worked for him, didn't it?
haven't seen the mayweather fight yet but i'm looking forward to it.

If you're new here watch the top right of the forum page for a Private Message from me. It will flash red around what looks like an envelope, coming right up, watch for it and refresh you page til you see it.

Just because it worked for him doesn't make it right.

Yes, it's very typical, although even after the fight, his tendency to hit and hold immediately after increased.

Not a total slag of the man. He's had a great career, some great fights, and just recently put up an effort anyone would be proud of!

But he does hold. Straight up.

Hatton holds a lot on the inside. And this works when he is fighting smaller/weaker fighters who can be outmuscled and mauled. But against welterweights, it's not very effective.

Hatton is a pressure fighter, but not a technical one who works his way inside. He leads with wide hooks or looping right hands. And he squares himself up on the way in as well. He isn't too good defensively either and he gets too close at times to really let his hands go and throw fluid combinations.

Overall, I'd say Hatton is a very good light welterweight (probably the best), but like almost everybody, he does have apparent flaws that could be best exploited by a counter puncher.

he smothers his own attack sometimes, it served as a detriment against Mayweather. I hope he studys the film and comes back better than before. He's a likable guy outside the ring, but he bores me inside of it sometimes.

His mauling and brawling style is not uncommon, but isn't pretty. It is very physical and requires a lot of physical strength. Hatton has had two fights at welterweight and both times his style seemed to be ineffective due to lack of size and strength. Guys like Cotto and Margarito would batter the hell out of him.

What still amazes me is how easy Mayweather can make it look. If the rest of us mere mortals try to do it, it just anin't gonna get done.
