Here is a vid of some very interesting rounds in Briscoe's second fight with the great Monzon. Bennie hurts Monzon very badly in the 9th (the first round in the clip). 15 rounds of action in this fight from two of the toughest middleweights ever. The rest of the fight can be found in various "related videos" on the right side of the screen. Enjoy (I realize it should be in the classic forum, but what the heck). Great vid. Two true greats going at it in brutal fashion. Bad Bennie (RIP) has a nephew who bounces down at a bar which happens to be in the middle of my apartment complex... the guy is the absolute man and he's got so many Briscoe stories. The bar could be crowded as hell on Saturday, and you could find me out by the entrance talking boxing and hearing about all the Philly guys he's met or knows... Hopkins, Harding, Reid, etc. Great guy, and he knows a whole hell of a lot more about boxing than I do.
monzon was a really fascinating guy, iron chin, I think he only went down once in his career, smoked a pack a day yet has great stamina, his insane personal life. Best middleweight ever with hagler, great clip.
In a sense, middleweights of the old days were essentially what we see as welterweights or jr. middles today, because they weighed in on the day of the fight.
Middleweights around today would be easy work for Bad Bennie. **** they would probably move up or down to other divisions just to avoid him.
Thanks Monzon did well to get out of that 9th round.Bennie is more defensively sound then i would have imagined.weird to hear a commentator say spunk
If you watch vids of Monzon's fights, he lands more little left uppercut kind of punches than anyone else. It's almost an "up jab" from the side. Watch rounds 5 and 6 of Monzon's fight with Napoles on youtube and watch a great big man chew up a great smaller man. And you're right. Monzon was ROCKED by Briscoe.
