Imagine the divisions, exciting match-ups, and all round evolution of the sport if we had only 7 weight divisions as according to modern man/ athletes. Some of the weight divisions are so laughable it too funny hearing people argue that Amir Khan is a champion or weather some other offbeat guy like Zaveck is a champion in made up watered down divisions. The weight divisions exist to make it somewhat fair, as it crazy for a man who weighs 120 pounds to ever fight a man weighing 250 pounds. This idea of unfairness has been taken advantage of by promoters, television companies and organisations who want to make out this is a championship fight or that this guy is a champion of the world at 154. Its laughable that the heavyweight in general get such bad press or given such a good hiding by the hardcore, as in reality they are the best of the best, the crème de la creme. We beside David Haye for taking on Audley Harrison because Audley skill level and ability is not top ten material in the heavyweight ranks yet would we ever see Amir Khan take on super-middleweight Brian Magee? No most of us sheep would laugh at it becuase we were brandish it unfair....yet in reality Amir Khan skill level and talent is far superior to Magee but becuase there is 25 pounds or so we would say its unfair. YET David Haye weighs in at 210 against Harrison 253.......a 43 pound difference and we still jump on him. (Including me, there are far more deserving fighter than Harrison). Somtimes I have to stand back and start to look at the whole picture, and understand that all these weight divisions are useless, and totally unsporting. We keep it simple- 210 + Heavyweight 210-185 Light-Heavyweights (25 pound difference) 185-165 Middleweights (20 pound difference) 165-150 Welterweights (15 pound difference) 150-140 Lightweight (10 pound difference) 140-130 Featherweight (10 pound difference) 130-120 Bantamweight (10 pound difference) 7 Weight divisions, 7 champions and all of a sudden people know what it means to be a champion.
Everybody is listing the problems yet there is nothing we can do about it, we will have many divisions, many champions, fighters being stripped of belts, the problem is the sanctioning bodies but since they dont have to answer to anyone they can do as they please.
i agree, nice writing bro. Unfortunately the fans of boxing are generally smarter than the bosses and promoters of boxing. ThWeight classes set like u suggest reminds me of ufc....which frequently matches the best against the best...and "real" title fights
110- 110-120 120-130 130-145 145-160 160-175 175-200 200+ That would be mine. Always a span of ~10%. One problem is that some fighters have problems making weight in the lower classes. So a guy who stands in the ring with 138 pounds, because he can't make 129, could face off with a guy who walked over the scale at 145 but stands in the ring with 160. Haye was lucky that Harrison is a bum. If Haye had to fight guys like Klitschko every time, he'd be in serious trouble. That is, in relation, what could happen to a lot of the small guys.
If your good enough then your good enough- Pacman has showed this Davey Haye taken on Harrison and Valauev who each out weighed him by 43 pounds and 100 pounds. (Yes i know they are average heavyweights but still) The big boys at the top should be able to deal with this weight disparity of 25 pounds, 20 pounds etc. We keep it simple. In NFL, we dont have champion under 180 pounds, or champions with the best results in the 2nd quarter. We dont want boxing diluted.
its ridiculous that someone can call themselfs 5 division world titlest from 122, 126, 130, 135, 140, all the while there natural bodyweight may very well be over 140
