CEO Richard Schaefer is trying to entice Juan Manuel Marquez to renew his promotional agreement with Golden Boy Promotionsand, according to ESPN.com, is dangling a possible junior welterweight title fight against Zab Judah as bait. Schaefer and Marquez (52-2-1, 38 knockouts) met last week to discuss a multi-fight contract, beginning with a possible pay-per-view clash with Judah (41-6 28KOs) in July. Rampant rumors have hinted that Marquez is interested in leaving Golden Boy, as Shane Mosley did before him, to pursue a fight with Manny Pacquiao, a Top Rank commodity. "Marquez was interested," Schaefer told ESPN. "We're talking about it. We've made him a really good offer. That's all I really want to say. I'm not going to discuss what we talked about related to (Pacquiao.) That's nonproductive to discuss it in the media." Judah, promoted by Kathy Duva of Main Events, has made no secret in recent weeks of his interest in fighting Marquez. He won the vacant IBF junior welterweight title on March 5 with a seventh-round TKO over Kaizer Mabuza. Marquez is the reigning WBO lightweight titlteholder and also holds the WBA Super lightweight title. His most recent fight was a seventh-round TKO victory over Michael Katsidisin November.
Let's review the facts. 1. JMM is now 37 years old. 2. One fight against Pac, he will probly make 5 mil. 3. It would take him at least 3 fights with GBP to make 5 mil. What if JMM gets injured on the 1st of the 3 fights? JMM is old, he doesn't have time to f**k around. Best deal would be go with TR. .....but knowing Beristain and JMM, they are capable of choosing 35,000 than 750,000.
As a Judah fan I would love for JMM to stick with golden boy and sign on for the fight, but if i was JMM i definitely would not do it. I would leave golden boy, join top rank, and get my trilogy with pacman. then retire.
If it don't make dollars, it don't make sense. The payday vs. Judah would be pitiful compared to the one against Pac. If I'm JMM, I'm at Bob Arum's house chillin' by his pool right now.
Agreed. A third fight with pac would make more sense and not to mention a bigger or possibly the biggest payday for JMM. It will also clear up the dispute about their previous fights.
Judah is a waste of time for any top fighter. The man has nothing of value to bring to the table. He doesn't have PPV appeal, he's old & shopworn so beating him doesn't do much for your resume, and he holds no titles.
won't even have to join top rank. he's been around boxing longer than most fighters today, and always been one of those concerned with purse splits and all that so he should know what kind of money he could demand for himself. He can fight to sign Pac as a free agent, and get a bigger purse 5+ million, without a promoter taking anything. and if Arum wants an option for his next fight, so be it. They could make the Rios fight, win or lose against Pac, and it will sell well too. He can also get a Judah without Golden Boy. He should be fighting pac if he was that desperate for it, apparently he's not anymore. golden boy must be offering some incentives for after his retirement to sign on, which will be hard to pass up. we saw how they stabbed mosley in the back when all he was trying to do was make the most money possible. if jmm signs to fight pac that will be the end of him at golden boy for sure
lol I've never seen so many *******s want a JMM bout next... Last time in the negotiations, JMM asked for 5.5 Million and they rejected his offer saying he overpriced himself.. LOL the *******s make countless threads saying JMM ducked PAC by over pricing himself so much fail... JMM can easily make more money then going with PAC because ARUM will give him peanuts compared to what GBP will give him a 4 fight deal.. with plenty of money and incentives to make him stay. They cannot lose JMM and offering more then 5 Million is easy money knowing full well that they are competing with TR. JMM doesn't need PAC he only wants him... and with enough money he can be pursueded to saty with GBP... plus JMM could leave after this deal and face PAC when he is completely done, JMM will have no chance but will make an easy opponent for PAC just how he likes em.
But is a fight against Pac gurranteed? I agree with the member who said that Marquez should stay as a free agent and get the most possible money for himself.
If floyd steps up marquez gets stepped over, but if he doesnt marquez gets it, arum ahs given us many hints to believe it. I like marquez, but he will get knocked out against pac at 147 and pac will get no credit, thus giving marquez a win/win situation, huge money and a chance at legacy, if he loses he never belonged at 147 and it wont hurt him. If I was marquez I would choose toprank pac route moneywise it makes the most sense and he can always go back to 140 for 1/2 fights to get a fourth title before hanging them up. If he goes the gbp route, he will go in a risky route that will help his legacy if succesfull but needs to be perfect for enough money. I would love to see him fight judah, I would prefer if that fight had already been made and if marquez won he could get pac at 140/144 in november but it seems thats unlikely.
