yeah, all about the extent to which the relevant factors are indeed relevant. i've just been watching jersey joe for hours, and am not ali's biggest fan, so feel free to dismiss my post as biased!

generally, though, i rate the intangibles of seventies ali very highly, and feel they give him the edge in plenty of fantasy match-ups. no one has ever had that combination of chin+heart+smarts. sixties ali was a physical phenom who overwhelmed opponents, but i think they were quite a limited and uniform bunch in many ways, especially when compared to his seventies opponents.

During Ali's second reign, Jersey Joe was actually the most outspoken proponent of Muhammad's HW GOAT supremacy among Ali's then living historical predecessors, an opinion Louis took the lead in disputing. Walcott's advocacy of Ali attracted wide notice, given his many rounds of competitive experience with Louis, Charles and Marciano.

you see, walcott knew the second reign was what set ali apart. he still would've smacked ali during his first reign, though!

    What about Pete Rademacher.

If he won the world title on debut, he could have retired and pretty muched had the perfect record.

  5. yeh you are right , but if holmes lost that fight but went on and beat shavers and norton etc would that still have meant nothing to ali's resume ?
