Out of interest, why would anyone have Lopez above Gonzalez? I know Gonzalez dropped some losses to average competition, something Lopez never did, but he has two big wins over Michael Carbajal, someone is more knocking on the door of a number 1 spot at 108. Lopez for me has a nice long reign as the best 105 fighter against competition that was clearly unable to keep up with him, yet he ever moved up to take on Manitas or Chiquita, the two fighters who could have really tested him.

 

Wow very intresting... If there was one thing about Sanchez its that he tended to cruise at times and actually give rounds away, he made some fights closer than they should have Cowdell,Nelson,Castillo granted those guys were great or very good fighters but every time Sanchez turned it up a notch he seemed to pull away or in the case with Nelson pull out the ko. Where as guys like MAB,EM never really seemed to cruise at all.....IMO JMM and Sanchez had similar styles (although Sanchez was Better)..

That being said i think prime Barrera would have won a close decision over a YOung Nelson, dont think he would have ever eased up, but Barrera would have to be at his best anything less and Nelson would have beat him... Physically Nelson is maybe the strongest FW ive ever seen..... Barrera was strong too and could slug it out with the greatest of fightes but i think hed be best served to fight a tactical fight here, he does that and he pulls it out................ Im not so sure with Morales especially the one who went life and death with Chi adn Espadas I... Im taking Nelson over that Morales, in fact i think he might edge any version as Morales would be more than willing to go to war... Nelson was faster,physically stronger and would probably get the best of Morales in that type of fight.. Ill go with Nelson by close decision, or possibly late stoppage............... Im thinking Marquez at his best would have the right style to beat a young Nelson, a couple Kds from Nelson would make it close of maybe controversial this could be like Manny-Marquez I.... I think Nelson at 20 fights might have pulled this out though not sure pickem match..... Its hard to say all these fights would be close they are all pretty on much on par in HTH matchups.


Does that mean i think they were almost Sanchez equal, since Nelson gave Sanchez all he wanted? No not really i mean those guys could hold their own with anyone but like i said earlier Sanchez tended to go in cruise control and pull fights out when he wanted... He always did enough to win.................. Although he pretty much dominated great fighters like Gomez and Danny Lopez on his best days.

 

I go with JC Superstar followed Eric Morales and then MAB. I like Lopez too but I didnt think he had too many big fights during his era.

Chavez fought alot of cab drivers but he also beat aloooooooot of world class fighters and champions, he has over 30 wins in title defenses .. Now name me all the fighters that have done that?

You make some good points.

Gonzalez faced and beat a higher level of competition, but his two victories over Carbajal aren't looked on as favourably as you might think. Anarci might be able to give you a different viewpoint, but Carbajal seemed to fade after his '93 victory. He was perhaps a victim of falling in love with his power, and instead of using Boxing skills he obviously had, he was instead loading up with single shots more and more. In other words, when both fighters were at their best, Carbajal won by KO.

Do I think there's room for argument? Yes, but Lopez was clearly the superior fighter and would have knocked Gonzalez out at 108lbs. He was no defensive master and could be hit fairly often, and was known to go down.

I don't know a great deal about Nelson, but he was certainly strong as ****. MAB would definitely be best served to fight a tactical fight. No question.

I remember my dad recognizing that about Carbajal before i did (falling in love with his power) where as Chiquita fought a disciplined fight and outboxed Carbajal in the next 2 fights........... Finito never fought Carbajal or Chiquita because he was Don Kings boy and Arum had control over Carbajal and Chiquita..... Just like today these promotors would rather shine on the best fights just because of their issues.. Besides Chiquita and Carbajal were making big money fighting each other and Arum was scoring off of both guys. Why would he do buisness with King and risk losing meal tickets to King and Lopez? Anyways a lot of people felt then that those 2 didnt want no part of Lopez high risk low reward as he hadnt had the big name yet... However hardcore fans felt Lopez was better than both of them... I was fans of all 3 and felt Lopez would have beaten them both... Especially Gonzalez who stylistically would have made Lopez shine... Hed beat Carbabjal too especially the one who fell in love with his power and seemed to forget everything else.

 

:good What power he had though, A. I've always said he's the hardest hitting Light Flyweight I've ever seen. His one punch knockouts of Kim & Santos were viscious.

Kim had given Gonzalez all he could handle just before.

 

There's only one Gran Campeon and that's Julio Cesar Chavez. However, if Juan Manuel Marquez can break the fourth weight class curse and win another title - he might surpass Chavez.

 

If he could do that id probably put him above Barrera,Morales but i think hed have to then beat Manny for the WW title to even think about putting him on par with Sanchez and Chavez.
