My new years resolution was to pay more attention to the lower weight classes, aside from Nonito Donaire and Showtimes' newly constructed Bantamweight tournament the majority of these fighters aren't on Network, so I've been doing my own research. Watching fights on YouTube, Looking at records, and trying to find out who's who.

Over the last week I've been studying Pongsaklek Wonjongkam of Thailand who happens to be the #6 rated fighter P4P by Ring Magazine, up until the week he was the only fighter on the P4P list that I hadn't seen fight.

I've watched a few of his fights over the last few days maybe two or three but one of the most alarming things I've noticed is the records of the fighters on his resume. He's 80-3, however, his record is filled with Novice fighters with records of 1-2, 0-2,1-3, or even in 2008 he fought three fighters in a row that had no professional experience.

I'm all about fighters staying active and keeping in top condition, but, padding your record and keeping active are two totally different things. Even Julio Cesar Chavez who was criticized to some degree about his level of opposition ( Tijuana Taxi Drivers) still fought elite level fighters once he became a marquee superstar.

Why hasn't anybody criticized Pongsaklek Wonjongkam about the level of opposition he's faced, if we held him to the same standards as anybody else on the P4P list like Floyd Mayweather for example their'd be an outrage if he fought an opponent that was 1-2 and 0-2 in his last two fights, so, why dose Pongsaklek Wonjongkam get a pass.

At least, he's still winning against a top guy once per year or so, so it's okay for me... Damn, he already fought 3 times this year !

There's not a lot of money involved in those categories, so I think it is normal to see more fights against taxi drivers.

as a p4p ranked world champion to fight 3 guys that have a combined record of 2-7 looks like the biggest bull**** ever.

He does it to remain active. I prefer it to him simply putting his feet up and wasting away between big fights.

Also, he's not a marquee name. Most people even in the Western boxing community do not particularly care, you have to be a more invested boxing fan to know of him, hence he doesn't get the criticism that someone at the same level but from the UK, USA, Europe or Latin Americas would get.

We would but no one can spell or say his name so we leave it well alone

And lower weight fighters make WAY less money, so he may be trying to pad his wallet and not his record.

He is probably just making a few hundred a fight, maybe a couple of G's if he's lucky. He is fighting in a developing country with little media coverage.

Mayweather can fight once a year and make more than Wonjongkam will make his entire lifetime. Sad, but capitalism ruined boxing. :bart

Pong fought Koki Kameda and Suriyan last year. the year before he fought JC Miranda and Naito.. thats good opposition. His next fight will be against Edgar Sosa.
those showcase fights are common in Thailand they also eat worms etc its just different

"There are fighters who are willing to fight the best, doing so as often as possible, and there are fighters who only fight those they are certain to defeat. Unfortunately, The Ring's number one flyweight Pongsaklek, 65-2 (34), falls into the latter category. The diminutive Thai scored yet another victory over inferior opposition as he has the majority of his career..."

quote taken from an old Ring Extra I had lying around from august 07. ive never seen him fight or bothered to look up clips on him. i could care less

I agree with you thats why he is around 15-to 20 ish on my list instead of the top 6 like ring ranks him.... Has an impressive resume and record in title fights that should rank him high but i cant rank him amongt the elit 5 or even top 12 unless he fights one of the top or top opponents in his weight..... IMo Segura has passed him up just on his 2 big ko wins over Calderon and his very impressive power for a little guy. Segura is a big jr fly and he will soon be moving up id like to see these 2 fight to decide who the best little man is.

Actually the fighters over there make a lot more than that... He still pays sanctioning fees etc and they get really big crowds.. Guys like him are pretty popular in their home country.
