    Joe Calzaghe

    Major wins/performances:

    UD12 Jeff Lacy
(shut-out domination of undefeated but limited opponent)

    UD12 Mikkel Kessler
(behind after the first third of the fight, adapted to outbox opponent down the stretch and deserve the decision)

    SD12 Bernard Hopkins
(recovered from 1st round KD to outwork an older, slower, less busy opponent, but real controversy remains over whether his volume was superior to his opponent's accuracy/quality)

    Sergio Martinez

    Major wins/performances:

    KO2 Paul Williams
(stunning early one-punch KO of a top 10 p4p ranked opponent)

    TKO8 Serghiy Dzinziruk
(5 knockdowns and a stoppage of a guy who'd never been dropped or stopped before)

    UD12 Kelly Pavlik
(outpoints an opponent undefeated at this weight, recovers from a KD to outfight a guy 11lbs heavier than him)

Who's your pick in this battle of two top high-octane fighters, in short: who looked better against the better fighters? :good

The guys Calzaghe beat >>>>>>>>> the guys Maravilla beat. Skill-wise, size-wise, ATG-wise.

Seriously, what has maravilla accomplished...took him two fights to expose an overrated knock out waiting to happen in pw and almost lost in the mid round to a full blown alcoholic in pavlik....and who is this dzinziruk mofo....margo in the pac fight woulda murdered him .... again.....

This is a joke. You missed several great wins from Calzaghe's career. Martinez lost the first fight with Williams as well (although people change their minds now like they always do), he looked bs against Cintron over all. You miss out the fact that Dzinzuruk was hitting Martinez all night. Kessler is better than anyone Martinez has beaten p4p and Joe controled him. Also that "slow old" Hopkins beat Pavlik more convincingly than Martinez could and Martinez comes in at 170 around the same as Pavlik did. You forget that Dzinzurik has about 3-4 dodgey decisions over gatekeepers. Oh wait what was it you said last time "Kessler landed more on Calzaghe than Dzinziruk did on Martinez".

Got to say as well I think during his peak Calzaghe had better everything Martinez other than power. His power and chin left him at the end of his career but his chin still matched Martinez'.

Overall, Martinez looked more impressive based solely on the Williams KO and the Williams first fight.

    Who is Dzinziruk?

Pavlik fight Martinez didn't really look great, but he was probably the best opponent of Martinez' career and Martinez was moving up in weight and came from behind to win.

Calzaghe's domination of Lacy was more impressive than the first Williams win and the Dzinziruk win. The Hopkins win was comparable to the Pavlik win: Calzaghe moves up in weight and wins a linear title. Sloppy fight though, Martinez looked better.

Overall I have to go with Martinez because the Hopkins win was ugly and the Williams O was classic.

At the time of them fighting, I'd rate Hopkins and Kessler over all 3 mentioned Martinez opponents.

Martinez provided the greater overall performances (although the Lacey performance was a sight to see), Calzaghe produced the greater wins, over greater opposition.

It's close. Martinez best 3 all came back to back to back which is quite impressive.. While only two of Calzaghes were in a row.

    I'd still take Joes

this will be better discussed when Martinez is retired

  11. martinez has the most impressive ko of either fighter. what he did to williams will be talked about for years. that knockout was so sick. it's too late for martinez to match what calzaghe did. joe also retired undefeated. that's something. he has more quality wins than sergio. thats for sure.

    Is this a joke thread?

Fighters are being overrated based on his last fight.

Donaire did it against Darchinyan in the first fight and he did not get this overarted as Martinez right now.

Darchinyan's status at the time of the fight > Williams before the second fight with Martinez.

Martinez timed Williams with a good shot, while he had his eyes closed - big deal. Suddenly it erased the previous outcome of their first fight?
