Depends how you score a fight. To be honest, I gave up scoring after round 2. Was a frustrating and ugly fight to watch. Essentially Wood looked to have a higher work rate, but ultimately (and obviously) was mostly ineffective. It might look good throwing arms willy nilly with your head down charging in and in the process, shutting down the offence of a hit n run fighter in Mundine, but if your punches aren't scoring punches, then in my book, you aren't doing enough. Boxing isn't wrestling. Mundine had no real answer other than to either let Wood tie him up after he charged in or tie Wood up himself. I saw both fighters land about the same amount of clear, scoring punches. Again, Wood was aggressive, but just cuz you're moving alot, doesn't mean you're winning a fight in the ring. From about round 6, Wood got tired and gassed a fair bit I thought. His punches were no longer big, looping, loaded up swings, he softened and threw them with less ferocity and no legs behind them... This is where I got pissed off the most watching this fight as Mundine had a clear advantage at this stage and was refusing to capitalise on it by throwing some combos. Only until the KD's by some actually good shots did he start to be effective. The last round, a true fighter would have finished Wood off - he was gone with a connecting combination, but Mundine pussied out. A cocky move I thought, given he lost that point for holding. Anyway, I thought up til the KD's, the fight would be announced a draw, but Mundine absolutely was the better man on the night - you have to look through the illusion that Wood was effective in the first half. He knew how to shut Mundine down, but if you don't do anything yourself you've just cancelled all your work out. Anyway, **** fight, **** card, **** ref, **** just about everything. If this was on PPV in the US, there'd be a class action law suit to give all the suckers that bought it their money back.
at the end of the day who fkn cares, if mundine can't convincingly put a novice (and a very limited one at that) away well inside the distance there is a real problem! put it into perspective people wood aint top 100 anywhere!
I scored it and had it even after 8 rds, those 2 KD's won Mundine the fight, simple. The rounds were close and it was difficult to score, but the right guy won due to the last 2 rounds.
ok finally had a chance to watch this fight. God damn Wood's style shits me to tears!! As so many of you have said already, his style does not belong in the square ring! What Ive noticed in particular about mundine in the last 2 fights is the jab. The lightning speed that his jab had is completely gone. where did it go? He still had it in the medley fight... can a fighters speed really deteriorate that fast? I also noticed that when he threw them that he was missing more often than not, even when garth wasnt even moving. I have a feeling his eye is getting worse and as a matter of fact it has been for some time. Its something he is hiding IMO. Wait till he retires and releases his autobiography - he will say that his eye infection was the reason his career derailed right after he hit his peak (you heard it first from me ). Here is how I scored it, and keep in mind I really dont like Wood or the way he boxes: Rnd AM GW 1 10 9 2 9 10 3 9 10 4 9 10 5 9 10 6 9 10 7 10 9 8 9 10 9 10 8 10 9 8 AM: 93 GW: 94 Anthony's work rate let him down, but unlike many of you I cannot write him off as shot after this fight. With Garth's style I cant see mundine even 3 years ago getting many punches in. What do you do with a charging bull. You can only play matader for so long... It was more a tactical failure on Mundine's part rather than an ability failure. He didnt change tactics when he realised Wood wasnt gonna tire too much. For me the fight was a draw. the deduction for hold was rediculous for that point of the match. Gah! I dont want to see a 3rd fight. I dont want to see Wood fight again. He's no boxer. He doesnt represent the sport and sweet science I so dearly love.
