Go Back 10 years, you are Antony Mundine, how would you have done things differently?

Going after Ottke after 10 fights was a bit too much, not even Ottke as much but just mixing in that class too early. Mistake. There were a lot of good journeymen and fringe contenders and guys past their best that he should of been fighting and he should of been nowhere near fighting for a world title after 10 fights. Dingaan Thobela, Frankie Lilles, Omar Sheika. Those were guys that would of brought Mundine on a lot in his progression at the early part of his career at the 10-15 point mark. One thing i thought was glaringly obvious in the Ottke fight was that Mundine was just way to green in terms of pure boxing ability. Very fast, athletic, basically ran the whole fight and didn't have the experience neccessary to time Ottke on the way in. Its funny, he entered the pro ranks with so much confidence going over to Germany and fighting for a world title so early on. Turned out to be the worse thing ever i think, he gets knocked out and in turn it shatters his confidence and bottle for essentially the rest of his career.

 

1. never hooked up with khoder
2. kept his mouth shut about 9/11
3. taken 2 more fights before ottke

see here things start branching off. if all 3 items occurred and mundine beat ottke, he may have scored a fight with a big name american and his entire career would have been different.

had he not beaten ottke anyway:

4. ignored lester ellis' taunts.
5. pulled out of the siaca fight if he was really injured
6. more guts against kessler
7. not have cravings for munching on contact lenses
8. taken on kessler in the rematch. he had a good chance
9. STAYED AT SMW!!

 

Good points. The best ive ever seen from Mundine was the second Soliman fight. Technically very good that night but what i admired more about it was that fight more than any of his, he showed balls, mixed it up hurt Soliman and had the courage to move in and go for the ko. Hasn't happened enough though.

He should have been less interested in winning a world title in as short a time as possible (which was his oft-stated intention when he switched from league) and more interested in working his way up the ranks properly.

Instead, his arrogance and ability to ride his father's coattails and contacts in the boxing industry fast-tracked him to a humiliating KO loss to the lightest-hitting SMW champ in the history of the division, which effectively killed his confidence and thereafter his arrogance was purely for show in an effort to drum up interest in his fights.

 

I think he should have started at middleweight and possibly worked up later on to SMW if needed. The top guys at SMW Kessler and even Calzaghe were just a bit big for him plus they had his measure in the skill department.

He also needed tougher fights leading up to the Ottke loss, I remember Guy Waters schooling Mundine for the first rd in their fight and then obviously we know what happened in the 2nd. It would be interesting if Mundine never caught Waters flush in the 2nd rd and had to go a few more rds, these fights would have improved him no doubt.

2005 - 2007 were his best years, if he went to the states during this time there was a chance he could've done well if matched correctly..... Mundine would've schooled a bloke like Jeff Lacey.

 

He was just way too naive in his approach. Great athletic ability does not equate to been a great boxer.

 

probably wouldnt have been so arrogant.he used only his father as a sparring partner in preparation for Ottke apparently.allegedly had an ankle injury against Siaca
again if that was genuine what stupidity.after what i think was his career best performance Soliman II he should of went OS.

never read an ali biography - or at the very least read more about boxing than just ali.

the golden rule of how to spot a big mouth that knows nothing about boxing but represents with confidence?
1. a large collection of ali dvd's and books
and/or
2. a theory on why, when and how it all went down hill for tyson

lets face it choc set out to make money in boxing. he was just lucky he had another world class fighter in green in his weight class for them to play off each other - its made them both rich from the profile.

if money is your goal you do nothing different. if credibility....

as someone else said two more fights before ottke. i'd say 12 months - but then i'd do it all the same up till green but surely the coffers were fulll after that fight.

he should've branched out then. since the only decent fight he made was against geale.

 

if his intension was to make money....nothing..!
if it was to get a fully fledged world title,just pay and bring the sucker to oz.
rumour has it that he doesnt have much cash....all gone to hangers on and charities.
he is a superb athelete and a great boxer,just fell short on getting a world title.
he gave it a good crack though.

 

I said this a while ago, I bet we are reading an article in 20yrs time saying the "Man" is broke and Khoder will be nowhere in sight :yep

 

Anyone else remember how someone broke into Choc's house and stole all his designer jeans when everyone was out at the Entertainment Centre for his debut against Zohs?

His mum was in the paper saying she knew it was someone they knew 'who done it' and they'd 'get what was comin' to 'em' god bless her little rough-as-guts heart
