Been reading the forum for a little while and have finally plucked up the courage to participate. Thought I'd introduce myself rather than just start posting in threads. I'm in my mid 30's, been a boxing fan since my Dad used to let me read his programmes from when he watched the big fights at the Leicester Square cinema (something I feel my generation has lost out on), my favourite current boxer is Miguel Cotto. I also have, as the name might suggest, a lot of interest in the history of the sport and the way it has developed. Hopefully that doesn't sound too much like a lonely hearts ad!
Hi, welcome to ESB. I've just finished reading a book on Jem Mace where Tom Sayers features quite heavily.
I've got a couple of books about Mace at home. I've read the "Master of the Ring" but not the one penned by his Great Grand-child, "Gypsy Jem". He was a fascinating man but I'm not sure how much credit he should receive for Fitzsimmon's "solar plexus" punch against Corbett which the book I read emphasises.
Welcome aboard fella. If you've read for a while, hopefully you will know what to take seriously and what to ignore :good
"Master of the Ring" is a very well researched book but its also very pro Mace in everything from his womanising and his bigamy to the solar plexus punch and the effect he had on modern boxing. Great read but I think you have to take some of the claims with a little scepticism.
welcome Tom. Favourite current UK figher? Favourite current International fighter? Favourite past of each? FOTY Last year? Blondes or Brunettes? BK, Mac D's or KFC?
