Khan vs McCloskey does over 50,000 PPV buys Posted on Apr 19, 2011 UK pay-per-view channel Primetime has revealed that Amir Khan’s title defence against Paul McCloskey on Saturday has done over 50,000 PPV buys. The weekend’s broadcast, which was anchored by Jim Rosenthal with boxing veterans Steve Collins and Robin Reid, was put together at short notice after Khan parted company with usual partner Sky Sports in the final week before the fight. Despite a disappointing ending to the fight, which saw the referee and ringside doctor controversially call time on proceedings in the sixth round, the show was a huge success for the relatively unknown channel, who are expect the numbers to rise when the final figures come in. The news will be welcomed by Team Khan who were vigorously criticised by rival promoter Eddie Hearn for taking the fight to Primetime. Hearn had dubbed the move ‘commercial suicide’ and suggested the package would not even get 5,000 buys.
@Big Dunk you say this is hear say but in the article it says " UK pay-per-view channel Primetime has revealed..". Is the writer just making shite up? But I'd want to hear it from primetime themselves to see what they actually say.
Primetime said they got record figures. Nobody knows what there previous figures were for Froch fights just a few people saying around 50,000. They have never been revealed by a reputable source.
It suits Khan and Primetime for people to think it did as well as it would have done on Sky. Remember that when reading 'Primetime reveal..........'
Froch fight wasn't advertised. He has no real marketing machine behind him. Khan got marketing and just made a switch. 50,000 for Sky is a catastrophic failure. They considered 90,000 vs Prescott (I think) a failure. 50,000 for Primetime who probably had a fraction of what Sky had to do, wasn't so bad. I'm happy if Primetime can get by on 30-50k sales and consider it a success. They need to know they can break the 100k mark with the right moves.
Khan and Primetime got free promo from the fallout from Sky. The news around it all was good for them.
