Basically is it safe to say Lewis beat VK because he punched him TOO hard?

More like... because he grazed him with an off target punch. It wasn't a solid punch that opened the cut that stopped the fight, it was a grazing punch that basically missed it's mark, but caused a cut.

Its pointless to argue over that fight. All you can do is look at the facts. VK was ahead on the score cards, if the cut didnt happen then we cant say for sure who would have won. Bottom line is cuts happen in boxing and they can end fights. The cut was bad, Lennox continued to target it, and the fight was stopped. Lewis wins a fair fight while behind on the cards. I'm sure there are several fights where Joe Frazier and R. Marciano were behind on the cards before a KO win.

Lewis was intelligent enough to exploit the cut and get the fight stopped. He had obviously altered his strategy and gone after the cut for the last round or two before the stoppage. Perhaps that change of strategy affected the scorecards. Honestly, it's been quite a while since I watched that fight.

Bottom line, Lewis, in the confines of the rules, won the fight.

Lennox Lewis ALWAYS got a rematch when a fight was against him or he had a draw

Lennox REFUSED rematches to the guys that gave him the hardest fights

He retired from the sport with nothing left to prove, imo.

Rematch with McCall was earnt , with Rahman it was contractual and with Evander Holyfield it was required since the first fight was clearly fixed.

Correction: Lewis did not retire - Vitali retired him.

Indeed. Lewis had the audacity to punch Vitali so hard that it broke the surface of the skin and caused a deep gash. He should have been disqualified.

If Vitali retired Lewis, then Rahman retired Vitali.

Pointless indeed to argue about this fight. Facts are facts, Lewis is an ATG wether you guys like it or not.
