Hatton is more popular than Calzaghe, but Joe is definately emerging as a big name in England. He was voted by the people as the BBC Sportsman of the year in a big upset over Lewis Hamilton. That speaks volumes about how popular Calzaghe has become. Plus, what really put Hatton over the edge was the fact he signed to fight the best fighter in America. If Joe signs to fight Bernard, the recognized light heavyweight champ and sure-fire HOFer, I think you will see his popularity in England spike as the promotion takes off.
Jones/Trinidad - 420k Taylor/Pavlik - 300k Pac/Marquez - 380k JC/BHop - 650k (combined) I upped my guesses a bit more than I normally would. I think that boxing is getting back on the map so we will see steady increases in buys this year. Out of the four fights I will only be ordering two of them though....
I'll order three of the four. Jones/Trinidad will be a download for sure. Thing is, Trinidad still has a MASSIVE Puerto Rican following (still bigger than Cotto) and if Cotto vs. Mosley could do 400 000 buys, I see Trinidad/Jones doing AT LEAST that much.
Jones Trinidad 275 k Taylor Pavlik 425 k Pac JMM 325 k Bhop Calzaghe 500 k ( combined i expect close to a million)
Depends whether it's a ppv in the uk re Calzaghe v Hopkins. If it is then it will certainly do more than 500k combined, especially with an appropriate build up.
the PPV numbers are never recorded as "combined". Besides, they are two different prices anyway. In the UK they charged the equivalent of $30 American dollars for the Hatton/Mayweather fight, while in the US it was $55 to $65 depending on the provider. For the sake of clarity, I'm talking about JUST the HBO i.e. American PPV buys.
I think that the intensity of the PPV shows in the first few months will be a killer for the big numbers. Imagine that: PPV in october, november, december, january (Trinidad-Jones), february (Pavlik-Taylor II), march (Pac-Marquez II), april (possible Hopkins-Calzaghe AND Cotto-Clottey/Margarito-Castillo), ODLH in may (well, he said he wants an off-PPV card but will he fight for less than 5 mil? And what if the opponent will be a Cotto/Winky type? NO WAY it's gonna be free). It is a hell lot of PPV's month after month. WAY TOO MANY to get great numbers. With this PPV system boxing will never be more popular in the US. No way to bring in new audience with $50-$55 prize. I do think if Oscar will fight a Judah type of opponent on regular HBO, with a good 24/7 show Hopkins-Calzaghe can do between 500k and 750k... 24/7 is a HUGE draw, it could bring in 500k for Malignaggi-Ndou II and both B-Hop and the Dragon are very interesting persons (and you could still play the nationality card). The best thing in this is the contrast between 2 very different type of personalities. Like a Hollywood movie... Other than that: Tito-Jones 350k (hope people will save theit money for much more interesting and actual fights. But the names are too good. It's bad for guys like Vazquez and Marquez) Pavlik-Taylor II 280k (great first fight but no popular superstar in this fight - another shame) Pac-Marquez II 300k HBO and other TVs should realize that they just can't do a PPV show every month. The more shows getting a free viewing the more people will think about buying a PPV card. 10-12 events on regular TV and 4-5 BIG fights in PPV with a 24/7 like shows... that's should be the logical move.
Tito - Jones.... 350k Pavlik - Taylor 2.... 300k Pacman - Marquez 2.... 350k Hopkins - Calzaghe... 375k
I've got a great idea: How about they only make the huge boxing events PPV, and make the undercards stacked to make it worth our while. And then make all of the other fights free, rather than charging $40 for bull****. What kind of ****ed up world do we live in where the World Series, Superbowl, etc. aren't pay per view. Yet we are expected to pay a relatively large chunk of change for fights like Barrera-Fana and Klitschko-Williams? :tired atsch :-(
i do not beleive sky got 900,000 ppv buys for hatton v mayweather for a fight that took place at 4.45 am in the uk 200,000 would be more realistic.
When bernard Hopkins and Joe Calzaghe go and do the promotion work for this fight , like go round cardiff , london , Las vegas and philladelphia you will see them always arguing and trying to get fights with each other , the audience will eat it up! Calzaghe n Hopkins will make the PPV maybe 1 of the most intresting!
