i don't think thats enough. 70k is 1/5 of the purse bid for groves vs degale. barker vs macklin purse was gonna be double that.

The thing is good matchmaking is good storytelling. The problem with boxing is the lack of story progression and forward momentum. Take Khan vs. Bradley - what better way would there have been to kick off the hype for that than having Bradley in the MEN to face-off with Khan after the McCloskey bout? Would have introduced Bradley to the UK audience and been a nice image to kick off the hype for the American audience. Of course they can't do that because the deal isn't signed yet. Ditto using undercard fighters to build future fights - its literally impossible because boxing books one fight at a time.

And that's the problem throughout boxing - nobody is thinking two steps ahead. Of course the UFC can do this because its one organisation but the fact is if they wanted to Sky could get that power in British boxing like *that*

I would love to know how much Sky pay on their contracts, I read a recent report which claims that Sky have used their monopoly over Boxing to slash their licensing fees to a very minimal amount.

In the US ESPN generally gives a licensing fee between $35-50k (£20-30k) depending on the quality of the show, the difference being that they can also then bank on extra $ coming in from the Casino's, we don't have that over here.

But let's face facts - those shows are the shits. Nobody becomes a star by fighting on Friday Fight Nights these days. It looks just as cheap, cold and low rent as what Sky is currently offering.

Why think two steps ahead when you have one in front of you :dead

I honestly think that I could spend hours listing the issues surrounding Boxing but hay I don't have that much time, sufficient to say that promoters are no longer promoters, they are nothing more than booking agents.

Give it time, before you know it the likes of Jamie McDonnell, Denton Vassell etc. will become major Box Office stars.

It wouldn't surprise me if Sky were spending half their budget on their 29 man team of analyst's.

lol I do appreciate a bit of Steve Kim but he does seem to think that Boxing in Europe is run brilliantly, he thought John Murray was well promoted :rofl.

I don't blame him for his views it seems to be the way in the US, when they aren't dominant in a certain Sport it must be because that sport is huge abroad whilst only having a very minimal following there.

Yeah, but those fights are financed by a ppv not 70k. There are a lot of promoters out there who would love the 'problem' of having 70k to help finance their shows.

There are examples of domestic fights that have made a lot of money, take Rogan-Sexton 2. 9000 tickets were sold for that, generating several hundred thousand in ticket revenue. There are good fight cities in the UK and Ireland and with decent match making and proper promotion, decent sized venues can be filled to suppliment the tv money.

It might have been the Times or online somewhere can't remember exactly where though but it definately stated that Sky had marginalised their Boxing budget due to their monopoly over the Sport (and also because of the lack of interest clearly).

Promoters must be paying less, look at the main events and the undercards currently on offer, generally there is never a big name involved and when there is the opponent is horrific.

I remember reading a report on Sky.com about Jason Booth stating that he had never had a purse above £15k. If that is the case then why can't you have two/three competitive fights involving the likes of Jason Booth, but that clearly is the problem they clearly don't give nowhere near enough money to make those fights.

I am almost certain that they have a fixed fee for friday fight nights this is why the fights we want cant get made or dont get made as easily as we want.

I think that quality rather than quantity is the way forward get the best fights not all of the fights. This will encourage promoters to put on better more attractive fights and give them the budget to do so

That sounds about right to me so with an extra 20k from tickets that gives promoters about 90k to work with for your SFN, enough?
