What the hell happened? Wouldn't that have been Tim Bradley's highest pay day? Maybe Tim rejected the fight to build it up later on. If Khan fights Judah, he could def lose. Khan likes to lunge in and Judahs best punch is the left uppercut.
I would agree with this principle if we were talking about 2 contenders here but we're talking about 2 champions whereas one fighter is a unified champ. I mean come on shouldn't that alone account for somewere NEAR a 50/50. I get the sense that the split was probably like 70/30 which to me would seem like an insult to Bradley.
I seriously doubt Khan was going to make 3 million+ for this fight, which is what 70/30 in his favor would amount to if Tim was offered 1.4. However 60/40 or 55/45 would more than acceptable considering the massive difference in fan bases and even haters (haters generate revenue too).
This explains why Shane Mosley got 50/50 against Mayweather. When have belts or rankings ever had anything to do with purses?
This is a fight that could still happen, if it doesn't I would rather see Khan/Judah anyways. Bradley won't do himself any favors sitting out, but a Khan/Judah fight winner taking on Bradley in oct/nov would unify all the titles to the winner. Khan/Bradley to me is less appealing and probably ends on a butt cut early in boring fashion. Khan/Judah is more action I believe. Judah is hungry now, he had to earn his way back when he once thought he was on top of the world, he learned, boxing doesn't wait for you, it passes you right on by. Bradley should learn from Peterson what not taking a fight can do, he passed up 300k to fight Khan, then took 10k to fight on FNF, only to lose that payday too. 1.4 million for a 140 pounder with a small following is a damn good payday, and if he won he would be able to demand much more. This could all be postering and this fight could still happen nonetheless.
Ya your right, don't know what the hell I was thinking.... 6000 is probably more like it, but it would still add another $2 Million to the purse.
damn, bradley is turning down some good money... i know he's got 2 belts, but if he's confident that he'll win, this "small" amount of money to him should just be the motivation he needs to win... after he wins, then he can demand "star" money... but damn, he's losing a big opportunity here. atsch :-(
TIM BRADLEY DID NOT TURN DOWN A FIGHT WITH KHAN! Bradley turned down the options that came with the 1.4 Million. Gary Shaw did not offer him a one fight deal. Bradley turned down the offer b/c of the extension. It's a shame now all we will hear are these ignorant ass posters talking about how another fighter is scared or stupid.
I'd argue he's a big draw largely because boxing is more popular in the UK per capita than it is in the US. Khan can sell out venues in the UK, whereas Bradley has never drawn more than 6000 in his hometown. The size of a purse is a direct reflection of the number of people willing to pay to see the fighters. If more people are willing to pay to see fighter A than fighter B, then fighter A is going to have more leverage to say that he deserves the lion's share of the money that he's bringing in. I look at it this way, there are three types of fans: 1. The fans who will watch a specific fighter no matter who he fights 2. The fans who will only watch specific matchups he deems competitive or compelling 3. The fans who will watch boxing whenever it's on When camps negotiate purse splits, they keep each of these types of fans in mind. The fans in category #3 are basically taken for granted. The fans in category #2 tend to spike when it's a compelling fight, and that can be split evenly where both fighters benefit from the step up in (perceived) class. But it's in accounting for the fans in category #1 where the big disparity in splits start to show. Khan, really just by virtue of being from a fight-loving country, has shown that there are far more people in category #1 for him than for Bradley. There simply aren't a lot of people who will pay to watch Bradley fight a nobody. There are a lot of people who would pay to watch Khan fight a nobody (though one could argue that this number has declined lately due to Khan's PR missteps).
People talk like it's Khans decision on what to offer. Like Khan even knows what's going on in these discussions!?!? His managagment probably gives him the cliff notes, but 100% he doesn't have the lead role or anywhere near lead role in terms of negotiations. I bet he's not even in the room! Khans management know Khan is by far the bigger draw and deserves the lions share (Khan can sell out Arenas in the UK, which is highly profitable). Bradley can't even sell out a mid-sized arena in his own home town. Bradleys management know this too. 50-50 is wrong based on both being Champs, it's who generates the money that deserves the share - this is the entertainment business. If I was a recording artist with 50m of record sales in my last 5 releases and I was asked to do a duet with someone who had one sold 5m records over the same period and they wanted us to be paid evenly I'd say "*&%£ off"!! This is just negotiations. This fight will happen and Bradley will settle south of $2m. Bradleys team aren't going to risk Khan getting into a ring with Judah (or any other top rated fighter), getting knocked out and then never getting a chance of a near $2m pay day again. Who else could give Bradley this pay day?? I also assume if Bradely doesn't take this fight there aren't going to be many $1m region offers on the table either. No big draw will give Bradley this pay day and if Bradely doesn't fight Khan then he's peaked with his earnings (for the forseeable future). There aren't many superstar draws around and they're not going to fight Bradley as Belts don't mean much in those fights, only fan base and revenue does. Bradley main attraction is from the belts and that fits into the story of Khan, which is why it makes sense for Khan i.e. the marketing machine can say he cleared the division and make him look a credible/believeable superstar up there with Pac and Floyd (marketing perception not reality). I also think Khans team would rather Bradley than any other credible opponent as I think his team know it's just a matter of time until Khan is exposed and his team don't want that happening until 2 or so years time in Vegas Vs a superstar in a mega-fight (Ricky Hatton style - got knocked out, but had a career high pay day to show for it). Khan is one of the few cash cows with mega-fight potential in Boxing and Bradley is a risk worth taking for Khan as it keeps him on the road to those mega fights. It also makes sense for Bradley as he'll have a significantly increased fan base if he does and can use it as a platform to be a $1m+ draw on his own (both Pac and Floyd picked up 1000's of fans fighting Ricky) and set himself up for big fights vs superstars that won't fight him now. In summary I think this fight will happen, it makes too much sense and the risks of not happening are significant for both fighters in terms of career progression. Just hope that promoter doesn't wreck it.
What are you talking about. Shane mosley wasn't the champ when he fought mayweather. Anyhow belts have a whole lot to do with it. Why do you think Haye is making way more now for the wlad fight as opposed to back when he was a challenger the first time around. Because it's not Champion vs. Contender. Now it's Champion vs. Champion. which gives you leverage in the negotiation process. Huge difference. With Khan & Bradley you actually have a unified champion. Again it should hold some clout.
This part= not true.. Bradley fights anyone homie.. don't deceive yourself This news sucks... If Bradley signs to GBP he might get more fights.. but still... Khan team tries to dictate everything.. I hope HBO tries to get this squared away... Maidana and Judah are cool but this is the fight everyone wants to see.. although I wouldn't mind seeing Bradley vs Marquez tho.. and maybe a Khan Maidana rematch.
