Firstly, I'd like to congratulate Smith and Simpson for serving up yet another excellent fight. Both lads gave it their all, and I think we'd all agree should be proud of their efforts. As for the fight, I had Smith nicking it by a point. He swept the first four rounds on my card, before losing most of the middle rounds as he was drawn into John's kind of fight, before rallying to steal a couple of rounds at the end. However, I'd have no arguments with anybody scoring the fight by a couple of points to either man, or a draw - which would have been perfectly fair as neither man deserved to lose. On to the officials. I thought Phil Edwards had a pretty poor night.... which is becoming the norm from what I've seen. He was too lenient on Simpson hitting behind the head, and allowed Smith to get away with plenty of holding in close. I'm not suggesting either should have had points taken, but it had gotten to the ''next time it's a point stage'' by the end. As for the judges, it's probably the first time I've said Dave Parris had a good night. A 114-114 scorecard is perfectly justifiable, as was the 115-114 served up by Howard Foster (which conveniently tallied with mine).... but 118-112 is just disgraceful. I'd like to see which two rounds he scored for Simpson - knowing that daft **** one of them was probably the 1st atsch. My advice to Mr O'Connor would be to retire from all officiating duties with immediate effect - he's so bad that I'd choose Roger Tillerman over him to be honest. We've had the Calzaghe/Manfredo farcical stoppage, him scraping Amir Khan off the canvas against Prescott, 98-92 in Fury/McDermott I and now this. It's time to call it a day. On to the commentators, I thought Halling and Woodhall made a decent duo. Spencer Oliver was good as always but Glenn McCrory was on another planet. I've thought for a while that he was slipping a bit but last night was just taking the ****. Put him out to grass too. The single undercard fight...... Price did a pretty good job against an improved opponent. Sure, he was slightly overweight but he'd only been eating single 1/4lb'ers instead of the doubles with extra onion rings like the others..... and you couldn't really have anticipated a first round blowout, so well done. Hopefully the McDermott fight is made immediately but Mismatch wasn't all that convincing in the post fight interview. Sorry for going on a bit :good
Be interesting to get this fight posted up so it can be dissected properly. I think giving Smith the first 4 rounds is harsh on john tbh. As for the rest Beeston, I agree with it all.
I agree with everything you said other than the score which i gave to Simpson 115-114 but as you said it was that close. As for O`connar I hope youve sent a complaint to the BBbofC as i and many others have. When i saw who the ref was i cringed, Edwards aint got clue what he`s doing the stoppage in the Bellew McKenzie fight was terrible, not taking anything away from Tony. As for O`Connor hes a disgrace to British Boxing and should get a room with Tillerman.
Rnd 1 - Smith Rnd 2 - Smith Rnd 3 - Smith Rnd 4 - even Rnd 5 - Simpson Rnd 6 - Simpson Rnd 7 - Smith Rnd 8 - Simpson Rnd 9 - Simpson Rnd 10 - Smith Rnd 11 - Simpson Rnd 12 - Simpson Total - 115-114 Simpson That was my card for the fight. As everyone else has said, 118-112 is just terrible. My main other complaint for last night is the poor scheduling from Sky. I've no problem with the Speedway running over a little (even if it is a bit annoying). But to open the tv program with Price v another journeyman (albeit a slightly better conditioned, American one) is just stupid. They'll lose viewers! I don't know the figures but I guarantee that the audience probably got halved in the half an hour spent on a David Price mismatch to the main event: a good, competitive British title fight. It's just poor organising and really needs to be sorted out quickly in my view.
Woodhall was shocking last night. There was one round that Simpson was winning clear (I forget which one) at the end Woodhall pipes "Yeah Simpson just nicks that one!" feck off!
Mate couldn't agree more. I lost a lot of respect for his views last night it was a biased commentary pure and simple. He hardly praised Simpson's work and seemed keen to bum up Smith in any way possible. He would even praise Smith for shots that hardly landed in exchanges where he was hit with good shots by Simpson.
Beeston, best post i seen on last night:good i had smith by 2 rounds, but wouldn't argue if some1 had a draw or for simpson
My card is identical to this. I don't think Smith deserved to win at all though because he barely did anything but spoil and wrestle in the whole of the second have of the fight.
Agree with most of it, I had it 114-114 but a point each way was possible. I also wonder what does a scorecard like O'Connors say to the casual fan who may have been watching, at best he is incompetent, at worst he is corrupt. How is boxing going to attract new fans if they see something like that.
You could say that for the last Price fight that opened the show, but not this one IMO. We know he was against an overmatched opponent, but casuals won't have. Plus, with a nice paper record and Sky hyping him up he looked like a very credible opponent. And then he was flattened in a round, so I doubt the viewing figures dropped very much, if at all :yep:good
I thought Oliver was crap too. He scores it a draw, then says how Smith was the deserved winner and explains the scoring by saying "but thats boxing for ya!":****off
Rnd 1 - Smith Rnd 2 - Smith Rnd 3 - Smith (the only round that wasnt clear) Rnd 4 - Simpson Rnd 5 - Simpson Rnd 6 - Simpson Rnd 7 - Simpson Rnd 8 - Simpson Rnd 9 - Simpson Rnd 10 - Smith Rnd 11 - Simpson Rnd 12 - Simpson Simpson by 3 or 4 pts depending on 3rd and scoring both 1 & 8 10-9 and not 10-8 Seriously Smith did nothing after the first 3 rounds, i dont think anyone giving him it hand on heart can justify it:-(, especially when you add he was the challenger.
Forget who was the challenger and who was the champ. You'll end up getting worse cards than O'Connors if you head down that route.
