Cooper, whose hammer of a left hook famously floored the greatest boxer of them all, died at his son's home in Oxted, Surrey, two days before his 77th birthday. Three-time world heavyweight champion Ali said: 'I am at a loss for words over the death of my friend, Henry Cooper. I was not aware he was ill. 'I visited with him two summers ago during a brief visit to Windsor as part of the Equestrian Games being held there. He was in good humour and looked quite fit. 'Henry always had a smile for me; a warm and embracing smile. It was always a pleasure being in Henry's company. 'I will miss my old friend. He was a great fighter and a gentleman. My family and I extend our heartfelt sympathies to his family and loved ones.' Britain's WBA world heavyweight champion David Haye added: 'A true warrior and a great human being has passed away. Rest in peace.'
Rest in peace, Sir Henry. A gentleman, a brave fighter and a man that possessed a fabulous left hook and will to win. I'm glad he'd put his grudge with Bugner to bed in 2008, as it never seemed fitting that a man of such honour and nobility should have anything but positive thoughts from his career. Ali's statement says it all. Remembered by a legend. A sad loss.
I'm sure Henry stuck another big left hook on Osama Bin Ladens chin while queuing for the Pearly Gates R.I.P Sir Henry Cooper
RIP Henry. I had the pleasure of listening to him speak about his career a few years ago and he came across as a geniunely lovely man. He will be missed.
