I met him once. He was calling every man 'sir' and every woman 'madam' Very much a gentleman. He's in my top 5 of British heavyweights.

An extremely sad day for British boxing and for Britain as a whole, especially the over 45's (of which I am one).

I had the pleasure of meeting Sir Henry on a couple of occasions at amateur dinner boxing shows back in the 80s, and what a gent he was. He didn't give it "the big I am", he actually went out of his way to ask me about myself.

My Mother met him the day after he floored Ali/Clay in '63. Mum was pushing me in a pushchair past the Thomas A'Becket pub on the Old Kent Road, the pub doors swung open and who walked out but Henry himself, his twin brother Jim, Jim Wicks & Jack Solomons. Henry was apparently resplendent in a dark suit, white-on-white shirt and dark tie, complete with dark glasses. He was apparently charm personified, polite and courteous and not at all bitter about the night before.

That anecdote has been handed down through my family and I sometimes retell it to this day (although I don't remember it personally of course!!!).

'Enery was a proper gent (outside the ring!), he represented everything good and wholesome about Britain of the time, along with other gents like Sir Bobby Moore & Sir Bobby Charlton.

Today England has the likes of John Terry, Ashley Cole, Wayne Rooney and the classless trash talk of the likes of David Haye "representing" us.

Today, England and the wider Britain has lost another little bit of class, decorum, dignity and good manners.

RIP Sir Henry, thanks for the memories. I hope you are reunited with your wife Albina and your twin brother.

    Sir Henry Cooper.

    The spirit never dies.

Where I come from we have that saying: God has a hard left hook.
Now Sir Henry will give him some tough times!
