I cringe everytime I see this kick land, and over the past year we've seen it used more and more often.

Not sure which UFC card I first saw this late last year, but if you don't know what I am talking about, you will see Machida land one in the 2nd round against Couture and Bones Jones during his destruction of Shogun.

Haven't read a copy of the unified rules of MMA.. But someone is going to get their knee hyperextended or possibly worse one of these days.. Creating a horrific scene and injury. It is a awesome technique, and I haven't seen a fighter miss with this shot, but it should be a foul. Sure most leg kicks land on the side of the knee, but this is like knee capping someone with you're foot.

Opinions on the legality of this kick? Most of you have to know what I am talking about.

Also, does anyone know which Martial Art this kick originated from?

I agree, its a move waiting to go wrong. I feel a bad scene happening everytime I see someone go to throw it.

There are quite a few martial arts that use this kick. It's nasty as ****. Once it does some serious damage we'll probably see a push for it to be made illegal.

I got into a fight a long time ago where the guy I was with landed that kick on of the guys we were fighting against. It rendered a 6 foot 250 pounder into a crying little heap on the ground. Almost felt bad for him....almost.

Glad I'm not the only one, hopefully no fighters are seriously injured by this in the future.

Damn.. I twisted my knee doing some yard work last summer, felt a pop the next day.

Doctor said I may have dislocated my knee for a second, I had to wear a knee brace until the pain went away two months later. Absolutely the worst pain ever, couldn't sit, stand, walk, or lay down for too long or my knee would start hurting. I feel for you.

Yup, that **** looks vicious. If timed right you'll make your opponents leg fold the wrong direction.

nasty indeed, but come on, knee bars and heel hooks aren't exactly easy on your joints...maybe they should just get rid off all kicking and submissions...maybe make them wear larger gloves....

Its an excellent technique , im pretty sure its not derived from Muay Thai but i spent 2 months in Thailand last year , and the Thai's in sparring use this technique alot , it instantly knocks your balance out and is very easy to discuise , and as stated if landed and timed properly can be fight ending . Its a great technique for landing a bigger strike immediatley after its landed and worth drilling as a combo !!

Gotta say this , for anybody saying this is illegal , or a foul , i have to beg to differ !!!!

Exactly. Heel hooks and knee bars are far more dangerous.

A skilled MMA guy should be able to deal with it and he should be able to defend himself, I't only a problem when a guy with no skill gets nailed by it.

Spot on. We aren't allowed to use it in MT sparring often because of the risk to a fighters ACL/MCL. But it's fighting FFS, not checkers! If we're banning moves that could sideline an opponent; knee bars, Achilles locks and heel hooks are much, much worse.

In fact if someone even starts an achilles lock I tap in rolling because by the time I know it's on it'll be time for the surgeon.
