Pacquiao aside, the welterweight division is one of the weakest in boxing

I was thinking about this just now. With PBF inactive for the forseeable future who is the second best welterweight right now? Ortiz? Who has precisely one win at welterweight (although it's a very good one)? 40 year-old Mosley who hasn't won a fight for over 2 years? To me, having either of these 2 up there just seems wrong to me.

And going down the rest of a hypothetical top 10 doesn't get any better. I suppose Zaveck and Senchenko, the two other belt holders, would slot in somewhere. Berto's still up there, Mike Jones, Aydin and maybe Randall Bailey would be in there. It really is a very weak division.

yep. Cotto and Margarito are at 154. Clottey is inactive and probably at 154. Berto just got whooped by a JrWW. Mosley is too old. Floyd is inactive....

Exactly. All of the big names that were there even a year ago have moved on leaving not a lot behind.

Yeah, couple years back it was arguably the best. Now, it is made of the P4P #1, a couple of 'names'...and the rest are prospects, or untested.

Mike, Manny, Jo Jo, Victor, Berto, Zaveck, Brook. I like the division. They just need to actually fight each other. We're in a changing of the guard phase. But, these names are pretty decent after Pac. Some might turn out great.

Some decent names, but like you said, they need to fight eachother and test themselves. The one that sticks out is Brook v Jones.

as has already been said when cotto and margorito were still at weltwer, floyd was fighting, pacquiao emerged in the division as well as the likes of Clottey and Mosley the division was brilliant. Now the belt holders, Pac aside, are hardly inspiring and we have yet to see the up and comers truly tested in big fights

Totally Agree. Manny cleaned the house and the only one who is left refuse to fight and will rather fight lightweights.

    Owell thats how it goes

Im not worried in a few years there will be a lot of 140 guys fighting at 147, definitely khan and possibly alexander, maidana, bradley, maybe guerrero. then you have good guys at 147 that are coming up like mike jones kel brook and jojo dan. and pac and may will probably be on their way out by then.

147 has Pac and Floyd (assuming Floyd ever fights again), the two best fighters in the world. After that......nada. And I'm not impressed with the up-and-comers.

At least we can count on the 140 guys to eventually move up to 147, like Ortiz had just done

This is one of the reasons I sometimes defended Berto. I never thought he was a great boxer or anything, but when people would complain about his opponent choices, I never understood who they thought he should be fighting instead. A Collazo rematch and maybe Mosley after he lost to Floyd were the only real opponents I thought he might have avoided. Aside from that, Margarito was out of boxing for a year and out of 147, Clottey went MIA after the Pacquiao fight, Cotto left the division (and he and/or Top Rank turned down a fight), and Jones only started calling him out after he needed 22 rounds to decisively win agains Jesus Soto-Karass. Berto's resume sucks, but I think the shallowness of the division at least partially accounts for this.
