Pacquiao aside, the welterweight division is one of the weakest in boxing

I think the best divisions are under welterweight right now.

 

If guys like Kell Brook and Mike Jones fight each other it could open the doorway to a new welterweight era.

Hypothetically say if Brook and Jones fight, and Brook beats Jones and then goes on to beat Ortiz that would excel him into at least top 20 p4p status. Im not saying that will happen, but it could so long as young guys like Jones/Brook/Ortiz/Savek and Sevchenko fight each other

 

SMW is probably the best division in boxing today

 

I prefer the lower divisions: Márquez, Ríos, Soto, Juanma López, Gamboa, Rigondeaux, Segura, Márquez, Donaire, Calderón etc. etc.

 

They are not in the same division. But i see where youre coming from and whatever suites your tastes :bbb

SMW alone has Ward, Froch, Abraham, Johnson, Kessler, Bute, Stieglitz, and Dirrell

 

The beautiful thing about boxing, fighters move up in weight, others move down in weight, others fight at catchweight. One might be in a streak, while another one might surprise us. One might get KO, the slugger could change his role as the boxer or the boxer as the slugger. Its crazy and thats why I love it, dont worry about who is in the weight classes, just go with the flow and excitement. The guy who everyone counted is suddenly in the top of the world.

 

Welterweight isn't what it was several years ago when Pac, Mayweather, Cotto, Williams, Mosley, Margarito, and a few others were all there. It was a deep division and a handful of them ended up fighting each other. The division is in transition with those guys moving up, getting old, or becoming very inactive and a new group of guys are moving in.

I think there is a nice nucleus of young fighters there at the moment. Oritz, Berto, Jones, and Brook as well as some nice looking prospects ready to move to contenders like Porter and Solomon. I would also think some of the young 140 guys could move up in the next year or so like Khan, Madaina, and Peterson. A lot of good young fighters there who simply need to face each other.

147 was one of if not the best division in boxing and it looks like it might have a down year or two before the new names start sorting themselves out but in another year or two it could be back near the top again.
