Based on early projections, Bob Arum, the chairman of Top Rank boxing, said he believed the pay-per-view buys from Manny Pacquiao’s defense of his welterweight title fight against Shane Mosley last Saturday would match or exceed the roughly 1.2 million buys for Pacquiao’s previous fight, against Antonio Margarito.

This is significant because the fight, distributed by Showtime Pay-Per-View, was promoted heavily by CBS, in what Arum viewed as the first step toward returning boxing to terrestrial television. A number around 1.4 million to 1.5 million, Arum said, would highlight the effect of the promotion on the buy rate. Arum said he expected to know the exact number by the end of the week.

In the interim, Arum said Top Rank sent a second proposal Monday to Juan Manuel Marquez to fight Pacquiao next Nov. 12 in Las Vegas, a proposal Arum said Marquez accepted.

First, Arum had to work around an Eagles concert scheduled for that day at the MGM Grand, but Arum said the band moved its date to Nov. 5. In the new proposal, Arum said, the catch weight would be 144 pounds.

If it's around 1.2 million, that is a pretty exceptional number, all told.

However, Floyd's fight with Shane did 1.4 million without the network TV exposure. I guess we'll have to wait until the final numbers are in.

NO doubt in my mind that Arum is going to announce it did more than Floyds last fight, rather it actually did or not. Either way impressive numbers for a **** fight.

Of course it was going do 1 mil buys, Its Pacquiao. but I start to wonder how many fights can do 1 mil buys?? not many left, I hope one day Gamboa, or Ortiz can do 1 mil buys, those the only fighters I seen now. I think Canelo might be able too

Arum always says it's going to be higher than it actually is. He said Margo fight was going to do 1.4 million after the fight

My guess was 1.2-1.3 so this would be pretty much spot on. Gotta wait for as official figures though.

Shane wasnt an 8-1 underdog and that was seen as a much more competitive fight. It was also the most expensive promotion for a fight in history.

CBS helped a bit but not sure by how much. I heard ep 3 drew 1mil viewers...24/7 draws 500k viewers from a much smaller subscribers.

i think the bigger the PPV buys in a sense the worse it is. This fight seemed to be hyped up a lot and with that dud of a fight that was on saturday it could be trouble for future PPVs.
