Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather's adviser and best friend, told ESPN.com Friday night that the five-division world champion, who generated 3.25 million pay-per-view buys and more than $200 million in revenue in two mega fights in 2007, came away from a Thursday meeting with Cuban giving serious thought to taking his game and considerable drawing power to MMA. "It's definitely something he is interested in, and when Floyd makes his move, obviously it's going to be a mega event," Ellerbe said. "We don't have a timetable. Floyd is taking some time off, but Floyd understands what is involved. You have to take time to go out and understand what you're getting involved in, and he's ready to do that. But it's something he's definitely interested in doing. "If I said there's a guaranteed $30 million payday, Floyd would be lacing them up," Cuban said, optimistic that Mayweather would eventually participate in an MMA match. "If not, I could see him working to train and develop and invest in MMA fighters, knowing the upside. He can teach them how to be a better boxer and add to their other skills." I would like to see Mayweather clean up the welterweight divison first but if he wants to go to MMA that's fine.
Hey, why not? If Joe Schmoe from the Nebraska corn-fields can go train and fight in MMA, why can't a super-athelete like PBF?
I'm not a huge fan of MMA and would like to see Floyd cement his legacy in boxing before going to MMA. It will be interesting to see what he can do in MMA though.
That would be incredibly ****ing stupid. He would not make 10% of what he makes fighting in boxing in MMA. (which is fairly accurate, he makes maybe 10+ million a fight in boxing with purse and PPV bonuses, in MMA he would be lucky to get 1 million. He also would loose embarousingly to even a C level fighter in MMA because he has no wrestling experience. It is a huge waste of talent for him to switch to MMA. It would be like when MJ went to play baseball to live out some childhood dream only we found out he sucked at it.
I always wondered about this too. If I fought him, I'd play him at his own game just for the **** of it. And MMA blows.
mark cuban could give him 30 million and it wouldn't hurt hinm . belive me he can make that sort of money:good
Think your underated the MMA guys, they are highly train atheletes for there sport. There more than just some Joe Schmoe. They have great fighters and poor fighters as does any contact sport.
He'll be bitching more about his aches and pains in his back and joints if he goes into MMA, someone will wrestle him and tie him into all sorts of knots and cripple him if what he said on 24/7 is true.
My point is that a gifted athelete and boxer at the top of his game should be able to train and learn just like everyone else. Maybe he doesn't have olympic wrestling under his belt, but the fact is that most MMA guys don't, either. No reason to think that if he trained seriously in MMA (which I can't see happening, actually) that he couldn't be good at it.
