Fighters who underestimated an ATG?

    This thread is about established fighters who faced future ATGs and completely underestimated/overlooked them, and then got their asses beat. It's not about journeymen scoring fluke upsets.

    One example:
    2 division champ and P4P#2 ranked James Toney didn't train properly for Roy Jones. When asked about his lack of preparation, James answered that he'd simply knock Roy out. He then paid the price by getting dominated by Roy. (Roy was not a spring chicken anymore when they met, he was an accomplished amateur and the IBF MW champ, and already a boxing star in his own right. His dominant win over Toney made him a superstar).

    Another one involving Toney, a couple years earlier:
    Young green James Toney got handpicked by P4P#2 ranked Michael Nunn to look good before his hometown crowd of Davenport, Iowa (Nunn had some not so convincing performances before). Toney was considered one-dimensional and a stay busy fight for Nunn before he'd face bigger challenges again. Toney proceeded to knock Michael Nunn out and become an ATG.

    Any more examples?

    Maybe Liston and Foreman underestimated Ali??

    You're into something there. Surely Liston underestimated the young Ali before their first fight, as did most boxing experts.
    Maybe Foreman too, as he thought Ali was finished by 1974?

    Holyfield underestimated Lewis in their first fight.
    Chavez did Whittaker too i think.

    A lot of guys underestimated hopkins, de la hoya underestimated pacquiao, iran barkley vs duran, spinks vs ali the second time, maidana underestimated morales.

    Nunn underestimated Toney and so did everyone else

    Mario Martinez was a big favorite and hyped.. When Chavez beat him he was unknown.

    Salvador Sanchez came out of nowhere to upset Danny Lopez

    Naz underestimeated Barrera but he would have gotten his ass kicked anyways

    And Barrera underestimated Pac the first time... Down the line alot of people ended up underestimating him ODLH,Hatton and probably Margarito... I dont think Cotto,Clottey did. maybe Mosley a little.

    Delahoya thought he was gonna be to big for Mosley and was suprised he could go toe to toe. Delahoya thougth he was just gonna hit to hard or be to strong and fought the wrong fight.


    Qawi though Holyfield was to inexperienced figured hed take the kid inot deep waters and drown him wrong!!


    Carbajal underestimated Chiquita in the rematch.. Figured hed knock him out again.. Was suprised Chiquita could box like that. Chiquita also won the rubber match.


    Chavez really believed he was gonna whup the young hyped ODLH the first time... Probably even believed it the second time.. He had that kind of confidence/Arrogance

    The way things are trending now: Vic Darchinyan vs. Nonito Donaire.

    And though he may not be an ATG, Glen Johnson vs. Roy Jones springboarded Johnson into a different stratosphere.

    Hagler underestimated Leonard...? I surely think so, he probably felt is was some kind of higher justice for him to KO and humiliate Leonard.

    I think Ali himself underestimated Joe Frazier in their first fight. He beat Quarry and Bonavena and thought nothing happened since 1967, getting 'his' titles back from Joe Frazier would just be a formality - regardless of their animosity. Joe Frazier is an ATG.
