Also very good thread and good point above about how Floyd would be accused of using steroids and be on the same level as Barry Bonds if he was the one ducking the tests
When it comes to being illogically hated on, Mayweather takes a back seat to Pacquiao. Have a look at Teddy Atlas' rant on FNFs and demands for him to fight a guy who weighs over 20lbs more than him. Journalists, or so-called journalists these days aren't what they used to be, not that Atlas ever was one, he's just a bitter fool with an opinion. That's what most journos are these days, especially on the internet, but also in the mainstream, look what Tim Smith tried to do to Pacquiao, and that Wilborne guy calling Mayweather a coward on ESPN. Seems the internet and the global information age has killed the concept of journalistic integrity and everyone these days just wants to spread their beliefs every chance they can. Most articles I read on the net I consider opinion pieces, as that ESPN one on FLoyd in question obviously is.
Bottom line is that many people hate Mayweather because he's a ***** (and I'd like some convincing arguments from *****s to prove that he isn't). However, that shouldn't be confused with the fact that he is also a great fighter. Most people can't differentiate between the personal/emotional and his talent and it clouds their judgement.
If he just kept himself outta trouble, this could have played well for him, given that he projects himself as the villain, It will fuel the consumers passion in seeing him lose. He'll harvest so much from this. Unless you've forgotten, *****s have defended his actions as mere "marketing strategies", i dont see why they are actually reacting as if they're surprised?!
I wouldnt say he is hated "beyond reason" there are plenty of perfectly legitimate reasons to dislike Floyd Mayweather.
Exactly - there's a big difference between portraying yourself as being a ***** to generate revenue and genuinely being one. Every interview I've ever seen with Mayweather and the way he conducts himself outside of boxing lead me to believe that he is the latter. I also believe he isn't particularly blessed in the brains dept and hence doesn't know how to portray himself effectively as a 'bad guy'. He's actually not a huge PPV draw - his biggest PPV numbers have been down to the guy he's fighting.
