who isnt convinced by james degale's skill?

Degale is not as good as he thinks himself. His accuracy is not very good, he gets hit too much by national level fighters, he swings wide and slows down after a couple of rounds. These are my thoughts after a brief youtube session.

His potential seems to be very good, he's athletic, has fast feet and pretty fast hands but needs to work a lot before facing world class opponents. He would get badly outclassed.


Someone has to tell him he has to work or his career will end shortly. Confidence is essential, overconfidence is dangerous.

 

We won't put all British people in the same bag, don't worry.

 

He's a good fighter but he's unproven as a pro let's not get carried away and compare him to mayweather yet

 

DeGale is an awesome prospect, and I do enjoy watching his skills.

But as of now he's a prospect, nothing more. When he gets a world title of some sort and steps up with the big boys, only then can we truly appreciate/see what he's got.

 

His skillset gets overrated imo. One thing I like about what De Gale does, is his counter uppercut, and his drop back left hand, but he lacks a transition from defense to offense, which means he's not active himself when he goes into that prevent defense(should roll)

De Gale's ability to dictate and control distance, is not great due to the lack of a jab.

If you actually watch the Smith fight, Smith did well with the lead right hand, he pierced De Gale's guard a few times with it, infact its only when De Gale was more aggressive/assertive, that he had major success. When De Gale was playing counter puncher, Smith was using the feints to offset his timing, so he would find it more difficult to counter him coming in, then he would use the lead right to get off, and he landed quite a few times imo.

Smith's problem when De Gale backed him up, is that he let himself get trapped on the ropes. De Gale would stalk him off the front foot, then when he'd maneuvered Smith into a vulnerable spot, he would step in with his aggression. It does make you think what will happen when De Gale is in there with a mover who can offset him, someone doesn't get trapped and asks him if he has the jab to stabilize their movement, and the footwork to cut the ring off.

what i dont understand is how common this sort of theme is. Bold statements made before a fighter has been in with any real opposition based on what they perceive as skill! Yes he is very skillful at what hes done so far. against the opposition hes had so far. But christ how many times do people need to see an amazingly skilled prospect come unstuck at some point before they realise that this stage of a career is just too early to tell anything!

As far as iv seen, i see a decent solid pro who has shown an exceptionally good level of skill and so far is on the right track. But im looking for alot more from him yet

Im one of the few that wouldnt be suprised to see Groves give him a good test possibly an upset!

id add , chin needs to be tested , heart needs to be tested, how he deals with pressure needs be tested.

but i dont see that as a bad thing! hes early in his career but unfortunately like too many fighters at that stage of their career (especially here in britain) he's being built up as something he isnt quite ready to be yet!

And I have yet to see him KO people with either hand. His power is not that great from what I have seen, and like Shaunster has pointed out...it will make his bouts tougher as he moves up in class, and make his transition in to World class much harder.

 

Early days, but I've been very impressed with James.

 

You just made that up didn't you. He hasn't shown great power or ability to knock people out on this level never mind at the world level. His stoppages are by British Frank Warren refs that are all too happy to stop people on their feet. For me right now the power is a big question mark.

And we still have to find out about his heart, chin, ability to deal with adversity.

Unlike most in this thread, I actually agree with you. It's early days but I have to admit I'm sold on the guy. He's a bit of a d*ck to be honest and I'd probably enjoy seeing him get KO'd, but I think he's very complete for a guy with so few pro fights. I'd honestly take him over Kessler, Abraham and Froch already.

This is one of those times where the hype machine could get terribly derailed, but to be honest I can't see it happening. Definite World Champion in the next 3 years, and see him on a collision course with Ward down the line.
