I was just watching "The Fighter" and in the movie (no idea how factual this really is) Ward is supposed to fight a guy named Saoul Mamby but he has to pull out, and the only replacement opponent they could find is two weight classes above Ward and just pummels him.

Pacquiao-Ledwaba is probably the worst case of this - some unknown guy from across the world shows up and bludgeons the **** out of the champion. He just happened to be one of the greatest fighters that ever lived. I wonder what was going through Ledwaba's head that night (besides Pacquiao's left hand).

What are some other fights where a late replacement fighter comes in and destroys his opponent?

You could probably argue Lewis-Vitali...even though Lewis picked up the win, I'd assume he wasn't expecting that tough a night.

Yeah.... Pacquiao Ledwaba... that was a WTF, I heard XD

Not exactly a win but Martinez was a short-notice replacement to fight Paul Williams IIRC. But it did put Martinez' name out there, and as we all know sparked Pwill in the 2nd fight

Enjoyed that Fighter movie. There's been a few titles change hands when late replacement have won the day.

When Spinks first fought Ali, was that a scheduled top fight or did he fill in for someone because he captured that title very early.

Like you say, Lewis did pick up the win, but he was seriously under-prepared and must have had shock when Vitali starting seriously testing the champ.

I don't think so. You must have confused that with the Ledwaba fight.

Spinks was not a replacement. It was his Olympic accomplishments that prompted that pre-mature title shot at 7-0-1.

Steve Robinson was a late replacement when he won the WB0 FW title.

Greg Page when he KO'd Gerrie Coetzee.
