Not to sure about that for my money spike hits as hard as any irish boxer pound for pound (maybe with the exception of Lee)and Henrys style does make him easy to hit...Would love to see it though.
How did you come to the conclusion that Spike hits as hard as any Irish boxer pound for pound? (and i know you said with the possible exception of Lee...but still!!!) I think that is a complete over-exaggeration! He didn't beat Ciaran Healy too convincingly and i know ppl will say Healy is tough and all that but if Spike hits as hard as you believe then i think he would have knocked out Healy no problem! Spike has fought a lot of bums in his 11 fights and ive seen him say in the local paper down in Cork that he was very excited watching Alvarez-Hatton because he has the tools to beat both of them!!:think I think Alvarez would absolutely batter him and also I don't think he would last very long in the ring with either Lee or Macklin!
Henry has the better skills though, along with power. He seems to have improved over the last few years aswell. The only thing spike has going in this fight for him is his power. Dont agree with that p4p statement either tbh.
What city in Germany is the Rogan-Helenius fight likely to be, assuming that the purse bids are won by Team Helenius....
I'd imagine casual fans know more about George Groves and James DeGale after this week - and despite the premium needed just to get the Box Office - than they do about 9/10 of Irish fighters. It's sad, Sky Sports News really has a hold over the people. My mate, who is very broke and starting a family and no money and all that, told me the other day that he had 100 quid on audley. he knew he was a sap after being reeled in but he just believed after all that hype. Now I have people anticipating this fight - and fair enough, more enjoying boxing the better - but these are the same people likely to say 'McCloskey who?'
Sky hype really reels in casual fans:deal I have a mate who's a big david Haye, Amir Khan fan, and hes started to get interested in Degale now. But talk about anything concerning anything thats not well known in irish boxing and he will dismiss it, saying most of them are shite and its only mickey mouse boxing:roll:
were a country that by and large supports English football teams so can we really be suprised that people also buy into the sky hype re: boxers. Its not like RTE are hyping our fighters and fighters arent being built up due to lack of tv. Cant blame people for being interested in fighters that are getting press coverage eg haye, degale. I always try support Irish boxers but Im just as interested in the British scene because I see it every week. I spent a lot of money going to Germany to see haye vs klitschko ( ended up Klit vs Chagaev ) and I wasnt the only person off this thread that went. I know some of you lads are journos and its not youre fault but the newspaper editors and the people at rte and tv3 as well as the promoters are the people to blame. Rte and Peters got behind Dunne and it worked , although people werent long abandoning after Kiko. Other than that, Rogan is the only other huge ticket seller we have had in the last few years. That was thanks to sky and Frank Warren. This weeks events show that we are still hugely influenced by British life and media. Just the psyche of our society unfortunately. And Jonny Hips , Peters isnt doing flights but they recommended Dublin to Dusseldorf to me today
All very true Tommy. The notion of the 'sports mad Irish public' is very much a myth. Irish people, for reasons beyond my grasp, are the biggest bunch of suckers around. Hype anything up and they'll jump onboard. Ten minutes later they'll move onto whatever the next thing they are told to be 'mad' about English football is a prime example. Nevermind the Man Utd, Liverpools etc... It's not that long ago there were Sunderland jerseys all over the place. Rugby. Leinster get great crowds now and are every d4 heads dream. It wasn't much more than a decade ago you could get a season ticket for £50. Boxing. Dunne was built up for ages and gained a huge following that deserted him to a degree when he lost one fight. The standard of sports journalism in this country is awful too so that doesn't help. Repititious drivel and lack of original thinking, comment and opinions everywhere you look. If they hyped up the world tiddly winks championship enough you'd have idiots here following the thing avidly.
Remember how the point cleared in a matter of seconds when kiko poleaxed Dunne,I was walking up the road and all you could hear was "Told you he was ****" and "Bleeding waster that lad "comments from the newly appointed experts.
exactly Bam Bam. Wait till next summer and the whole country will be boxing experts and know what Katie, Paddy Barnes, Jj nevin etc have for breakfast because the media will build the hype. Come October all will be forgotten as the premiership heats up and the heineken cup begins. Im reminded of something I heard leaving citywest after Casey - Rigo " hes the exact same as Dunne, as soon as he fights someone good he gets knocked out. ****in shite " Irish fans arent as loyal as we want to be painted
we love a bandwagon sure look at the queen.when casey was ko'd people where calling him a bum when before hand they thought he was a beast
100% agree. I listened to this too. I got, he was a cocky wee ****er etc it was coming etc. Then when he won the title, I got 'I knew he would do it' etc. After Rogan-Sexton it was the same negativity, they are just instant casuals, it is all on the night. I wouldnt dwell on it.
Actually, one thing I am happy about is when McCloskey got jobbed against Khan there was still a good crowd in the arena to applaud him out of the ring.
