This thread is going hard it seems and I find it laughable.

Kebabi Salem dropped Calzaghe in his prime, Roy Jones who has been past it since 2003 knocked down Calzaghe in round one, so did a 44 year old Hopkins and whoever else tomato can he fought, I believe Sheika must have dropped his ass too.

A prime RJJ slices him to pieces and sends him back to Wales deformed so he can now relate to the opponents he plans to make a career defending his WBOgus against.

 

Yes he would have, to me the fight is a 50/50 fight Jones liked to fight in bursts, Calzaghes workrate and pressure and style backed by his stamina would make it a real tough fight for Jones, plus He jhad power in his hands at that time.

 

If the part-Italian Joe C were American he would have been idolized in America as a great Italian American fighter, in the tradition of Basilio, Marciano, Giardello, Pep, et al. But because he was raised in Wales, he gets the typical short shrift from American fans. I'm American by the way. Calzaghe looked a LOT better than Jones, and at the VERY least fought on even terms against Hopkins (I believe Joe won 116-112, the Harold Lederman score; BHops supporters said at the time that they thought BHop won 114-113, like the one judge had it) who has since shown that he was (1) not in the least washed up when he fought Joe; and (2) an obvious ATG light heavyweight. That is strong evidence that Joe clearly was a great fighter because at worst he fought on even terms with ATG Hopkins.

That doesn't mean it's not a reasonable position to take that Jones would have beaten him in their respective primes; but it's not so obvious. Jones in his prime had ridiculous speed. So he may very well have beaten Calzaghe. But it would have been one of the best fighters Jones ever faced, and probably the best.

 

Roy Jones had serious power in his prime and he proved it against serious opposition. Joe Calzaghe went the distance with Kababy Salem and Robin Reid. Hell, a beyond past it Eubank coming off major losses and two exhibition fights took his ass the distance. Calzaghe is only rated supernatural by the desperate British fans, that's just a face and you're one of them.
