Well, I'll give my thoughts on a great night of action.

Firstly I've got to congratulate George Groves for his victory.... showing skills that I didn't know he had, executing a gameplan put together by The Dark Lord.... who obviously is a different kind of trainer to the traditional ''hit him'' British guys.

As for DeGale, I was disappointed with his performance, to be honest he looked ****ing clueless for most of the fight and spent lots of time just following Groves around the ring. It's obviously back to the drawing board for him, probably with a new trainer that can improve his punch technique and devise a fight plan against the work of an opposing trainer who clearly does his homework.

It's definitely the last time I'll criticise The Dark Lord for being a one trick pony anyway :patsch

So, on to Frankie Gavin. Well, not a lot I can say about that other than that it was crap. Fair play to him for admitting it afterwards, he just wasn't all there tonight and spent nine rounds shoeshining Mutley with his jab. His ''I get paid more than him'' comment was very poor too, someone ought to pull him about that..... hopefully they get him back in the ring sharpish against someone that's actually going to try and beat him.

Billy Joe Saunders was VERY impressive. He's been probably the quietest of the young FW prospects, but really put on a show against a durable opponent that's been on the wrong end of some shitty decisions. He needs to be worked regularly, glad that FW said he's on the Murray/Mitchell card.... hopefully against someone that can give him eight or ten rounds.

The Cleverly fight was..... strange to say the least. The referee seemed determined to stop it as soon as he could, and eventually called it off because of a tiny cut, similar to one you'd get shaving. It was typical Cleverly, balls to the wall, lots of leather and no defence. Hopefully we don't see a milk run of shitty defences like we've had with Burns.

It'll be interesting to see how Warren manages his fighters and does his business from here on in. He's clearly not keeping the likes of Gavin and DeGale busy enough, both showed lots of amateur traits in there tonight, He's signed a few cheques that his ass can't cash, and as a result has to have these lads on PPV way to early and can't afford to get them the right opponents.

If you compare the mix of styles faced by Groves compared to DeGale and Gavin in a similar number of fights, the difference is startling. Groves has faced a rock hard pressure fighter in Germany, a limited banger in the States and various boxer types over here.

The Warren fighters have all faced Eurobums followed by limited boxers that can't crack an egg. DeGale was excellent against Smith, as was Gavin against Lomax, but both need to face more varied opposition in their next few fights to develop further.

Like a few others I'm probably guilty of jumping on the bandwagon with DeGale, up until Groves fought in the States and DeGale smashed Horton I was always saying Groves would win (the evidence is on here for inspection Palmer ) but in hindsight Horton is only really a journeyman with a pretty record, and the American was tough and crude.

Warren was a bitter **** in the post fight interview, no wonder people love it when his fighters get beaten.

Sorry for going on a bit :hi:

I only got in to catch the DeGale Groves bout, missed the BJ Saunders fight but I'm a huge fan.

I think all we can do is congratulate both these fighters (DeGale/Groves) for stepping up and taking the challenge on at this stage of their career, how many so called prospects have we seen duck the clearest best fight out there for them at this stage.

DeGale lost but has he any less respect for it, if anything they have made a rematch down the line an absolutely huge prospect. This is a step in the right direction for British boxing.

As for the fight, Groves showed great discipline last night, had the right game plan and saw it through ... hats off to Hayemaker for their tactics and their attitude.

Who was the 'I get paid more than him' comment about?

I'm feeling a bit rough myself. Victoria Bitter always gives me a hangover but it's a lovely drop.

Gavin was talking about the Theophane fight and that he was there tonight watching, then saying ''I get paid more than him.....'' and some other comments that I don't really remember.

Thinking about it more he probably just couldn't get up for the fight against Mutley, who was only there for his £££.

BJ saunders has always been my favourite of the Olympians, always puts real spite into his punches and seems the most suited to the pro style so far. Shame he's been out so infrequently due to injury, but hopefully he's fully fit now and should be out more often

Yeah, I was on the Degale bandwagon after the Smith fight. Always thought Groves would have beaten him before that.

The Gavin fight was so so boring. I missed his interview afterwards, but he can't have been happy with that.

No idea what was going on with he Cleverly stoppage either, ref couldn't wait to jump in and stop it!?

Fair play to Groves too. Most had writen him off and he came in with a good gameplan that made DeGale look poor for long periods.

Great post Beeston. Whilst we don't always agree I must commend your comments. I went for Groves. I had gone on record to say for quite a while now since April last year when he beat Charles Adamu to win the Commonwealth title that he would beat DeGale and for mehe was the best young British technical fighter I have seen for quite a while and he proved it yesterday. Frankly he was more proven to me than DeGale in the professional ranks even before their fight yesterday. I think DeGale needs to look seriously in the mirror. He was made to look one dimensional and needs a new trainer. They seemed clueless to Groves's tactics. I can see Groves fighting him and beating short as well.

As for the Cleverley stoppage that was extremely bizzare. I hate to say this but it did make mer wonder if there was foul play at work. I am sure this is not the case but very puzzling. Cleverley is not ready for the elite guys.

Very good post. If Degale came out with a post like that he wud gain alot more credibility and earn some respect from the people who think he is a *****.

I think a lot of people did to be fair. It wasn't just DeGale tooling Smith though.... Groves was all but out against Anderson, though he showed plenty of bottle to come through.

We can't all be right every time :patsch

Gavin nearly put me to sleep, showed Mutley way too much respect for me. His interview was mixed, was honest enough that it was poor but then started going on about money :nono

    :hi: Olu!

All good points.... who would you recommend for DeGale?

Cleverly's fight was strange, any right hand puncher will fancy their chances with him I think.

The Gavin fight was awful. It was only enlived by the Fury-Chisora fight in the crowd.

V impressed with BJ Saunders and delighted for Groves. Great footwork and better gameplan. I agreed with the judges.

Why did Gavin bring money into it? Strange. He doesn't look strong enough at 147 to me. He should be down at 140.
