Yet another DeGale (and Gavin) topic...... sorry :good

A couple of things struck me both in the lead up to last night and also on the day.

DeGale has made various comments about money, both that Haye was ''desperate to sign me but couldn't afford me'' and also the bet, that ''I get more than you so I can cover your wage''.

Additionally Gavin made the ''I get more than him'' comment after the poor showing against Mutley when referring to Ashley Theophane.... it's not the first time from Frankie either, when he said on here ''I still get paid anyway'' when Woodhouse was after a fight.

Now - I like both lads, but feel that bragging about how much money you get is both immature, disrespectful.... and generally just a bit twattish. I don't go round my local saying ''I earn £ x per year, and I'm sure that most of you don't either.

They are in a very priveleged position of being handed signing on fees to turn pro, and also hefty purses to fight low level domestic fighters like Horton, Mutley and so on.

Does that sort of talk indicate a lack of hunger, a lack of motivation, a bad attitude..... or just an attempt at going one up on an opponent?

To be honest, that sort of stuff pisses me off. It's as if they are cashcows before actually doing anything of note, and it shows a lack of respect to honest fighters like Jason Booth that have toiled year on year fighting British title fights or going abroad for European title fights for, by comparison, chump change.

Does Warren need to have a word about it?

Do these kind of deals need to end?

    Thoughts..... :thumbsup

young talented athletes get paid to much to soon, they need to really earn big money and acheive before getting rewarded with big money.

that money makes them arrogant and complacent.

the brash flash im richer talk is scummy aswell.

I think boxers as a whole talk far to much about how much money they earn/deserve/want

    Agreed.

I'm sure all of us have changed jobs for more money, but I've never told anyone how much I actually get.... why would you?

Many of them are set up for life before proving whether they are actually any good or not, especially in football and boxing.

At least in rugby and cricket you've got to become the best to get the best money.

    True.

Don't see the point in it myself, but each to their own!

Yeah, I think this is a fair point.

If you go back to when Warren signed Khan, he apparently had to get Khan on on PPV asap in order to finance the wages he was paying him. Degale must be on a fair bit, as the Degale-Groves fight was only possible if it was on as a PPV, and really a British Title fight should never be on a PPV.

The knock on affect is we the paying punters have to buy more PPVs for basically novice fighters who are not even world champions yet. I heard Groves in an interview today state that he was now a PPV fighter - no you are not Georgie son. You are not a world champion and even then you are not a PPV star (yet). It all depends on the fight, meaningfulness of the fight and quality of the match up. It needs all three. But, how often do we get all three ingredients in the recent PPVs.

Bottom line is, if Warren thinks he has a potential world class act on his hands then he needs to take a hit financially if he wants to sign the prospect, not rush him onto PPV.

I was always taught not to talk about money. It's weird when fighters like Khan and Degale seem really concerned about how much their opponents are getting and are so eager to talk about how much they are making themselves. We shouldn't even know how much they are getting!

It's like the US Open tennis when they say to the winner "here is a cheque for x million dollars" and hand them a big cheque. They should do that in private.

    It's totally classless.

To be honest, Warren should have just said to Khan ''do what you want'', because at the time he was neglecting the other fighters within his stable, and it was all Khan, Khan, Khan.

If someone wants to leave, let them leave, a few fighters like Benn have left for whatever reason and gone back.

I'm not sure why he had to pay these Olympians such big money, I doubt the American TV stations were falling over themselves to sign them, it's bollocks, when you think how many fighters they have compared to the UK.

I think Groves was taking the **** about being PPV, I can see him being a free agent TV wise just boxing on undercards until they feel the time is right to make the push.

    Agree 100%.

I don't see why it matters how much your opponent gets, so long as you are happy with your lot, who cares?

The Khans made themselves look like clowns haggling over the purse for McCloskey, then the last ditch switch to PPV and such.

It's funny how people pull footballers over money but never anybody else, even though I'm as guilty of it as anyone.
